A loaded weekend of high school basketball featured 16 MaxPreps Top 25 teams in action. Most eyes were on the Montverde Academy Invitational in Florida with nine matchups of two ranked teams.
The best of Saturday was when National Player of the Year candidate
TyTy Washington had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists leading No. 10 AZ Compass Prep (Chandler, Ariz.) past No. 2 Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan), 50-47. The Creighton pledge impacted the game on both ends of the court.
That signature victory came a day after the Dragons took down No. 5 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.) 78-51 and two days following a tough 76-65 overtime loss to No. 1 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.).
Caleb Houstan scored a team-high 21 points for Montverde, while
Ryan Nembhard added 19 points and seven assists, including 10 of his team's 15 points in overtime.
Another notable game on
Saturday was a rematch of last year's Class AAAAAAA state semifinal in
Georgia as No. 15 Milton avenged that loss with a 90-77 win over Wheeler (Marietta) 90-77 behind 29 points and eight assists from Ohio State pledge
Bruce Thornton.
Additional Saturday action included a matchup of two prep giants as Montverde Academy took down Oak Hill Academy 84-66. Since 2012, the two programs have combined to win five MaxPreps national titles.
A busy Friday night featured 14 ranked teams taking the court. A big upset in Nebraska stole the show Bellevue West defeated No. 14 Millard North (Omaha) 81-69 to hand the Mustangs their first loss of the season.
Additional Friday night results from the Montverde Academy Invitational included Sunrise Christian Academy defeating No. 8 Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) 85-69 and Montverde Academy knocking off No. 19 La Lumiere, 64-48.
