National High School Hoops Festival standouts

HYATTSVILLE, Md. – Luckily for Paul VI (Fairfax, Va.), a pair of phantom West Charlotte (Charlotte, N.C.) points didn't matter.

With the fourth quarter of Paul VI's game against West Charlotte in the National High School Hoops Festival underway, the Panthers scored an old-fashioned three-point play to go up 48-41.

However, the scorer's table accidentally gave West Charlotte the two-point basket prior to giving the Panthers their free throw bucket. On the Lions' following possession, Michael Brown was fouled and sent to the free throw line for two shots. The error was noticed by Paul VI coach Glenn Farello who asked everyone involved to fix the scoreboard, which read Paul VI 46, West Charlotte 43.

After about five minutes of deliberating, the officials and scorer's table changed the score to Paul VI 48, West Charlotte 43, even though the Lions hadn't scored in the fourth quarter yet. The Panthers were forced to leave nothing to chance and won anyway, 65-58.

"Fortunate for us it did not hurt us," Farello said following the game. "But yes, it was disappointing they couldn't get that right."

UNC latest suitor for West Charlotte center

West Charlotte center Kennedy Meeks continues to garner attention from schools around the country.

His most recent suitor is local, however. Meeks, a 6-foot-8, 265-pound center, said North Carolina has been in contact with him over the last month.

"It's very strong right now," Meeks said. "They're calling every other week to check in on me."

Though the interest is there, Meeks said the Tar Heels have not offered yet. Meeks reports offers from every ACC school except North Carolina and Duke. Georgetown, Syracuse and South Carolina have also offered the big man.

Meeks didn't have a strong showing against Paul VI on Saturday. The Panthers' stingy defense, plus a sore ankle, limited Meeks to just five points and three rebounds in 22 minutes.

Paul VI's Robinson boasts impressive offer list

Junior guard Stanford Robinson IV of Paul VI isn't planning on committing until the beginning of his senior year of school, he said following the Panthers 65-58 win over West Charlotte on Saturday.

Robinson holds offers from Marquette, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Miami, South Florida, Rutgers and Xavier. Syracuse has shown interest but has not offered.

Robinson said he hasn't thought too much about the criteria a school must have for him to commit because he's confident he'll excel wherever he chooses to attend.

"I feel I can fit anywhere I go," Robinson said.

DeMatha's Anya to narrow list in 2012

DeMatha (Hyattsville, Md.) center BeeJay Anya will begin trimming down his collegiate choices beginning in either the spring or summer of 2012.

Anya holds a laundry list of offers, with Florida State, Georgetown, Clemson, Maryland, North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Virginia and Virginia Tech among them.

"As of right now there are no favorites at all," Anya said.

Anya said Maryland has picked up its recruiting with him, as first-year Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon and assistant Delonte Hill recently stopped by DeMatha for a practice.

"As a program it's going to be a lot better since (former Maryland coach) Gary Williams left," Anya said. "No disrespect to Gary Williams, but I think (Turgeon) is starting to turn the program around a little."

High School Hoops Festival standouts

Tyler Lewis, Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.): Lewis put in a superb second half in Oak Hill's 68-59 win over Grace Prep (Arlington, Texas). The 5-10 senior point guard scored 22 points and picked up five rebounds. He added two official assists, though it seemed he had quite a few more than the scorer's table gave him credit for.

Patrick Holloway, Paul VI: Holloway gave his team a spark from behind the 3-point line, hitting 3 of 5 attempts. Holloway added a dunk as he finished with 21 points in Paul VI's 65-58 win over West Charlotte. George Mason found a nice sharp-shooter that could light up the CAA in years to come.

Jerami Grant, DeMatha: Grant posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. His two dunks brought the fans to their feet and he was awarded the game's MVP following DeMatha's 83-57 blowout win over Jamesville-DeWitt.

DaJuan Coleman, Jamesville-DeWitt: Despite the lopsided loss against DeMatha, Coleman showed why he's one of the best big men in the country. Coleman's size will be a clear advantage in league play as he was able to score 19 points and record 10 rebounds against the Stags. It might have been a closer game if Coleman didn't get into foul trouble early.

Isaiah Austin, Grace Prep (Arlington, Texas): Austin was a force for Oak Hill to reckon with all game. The future Baylor Bear (13 rebounds) helped Grace Prep out-rebound Oak Hill 50-38. come down with 50 rebounds. He also scored 16 points in a 68-59 loss to the Warriors.

Three festival surprises

Kethan Savage, Episcopal (Alexandria, Va.): With Episcopal playing in one of the early undercard spots, not many people got to see Savage go to work against Benedictine (Richmond, Va.). If it weren't for Savage's play on offense, Episcopal might not have won. The George Washington commit scored half of Episcopal's total, posting 22 points in a 44-38 win.

Tilman Dunbar, Paul VI: Dunbar was impressive in Paul VI's win over West Charlotte, scoring 14 points and dishing three assists. Dunbar holds mostly mid-major offers, including American, Quinnipiac and Howard. He's only 5-10, which may contribute to his lack of a major offer. But if his play continues like it did Saturday, some bigger schools may be forced to take notice.

Kameron Taylor, DeMatha: The senior guard shot the lights out of the ball, sinking all three of his 3-point attempts. He finished with 17 points in just nine minutes of game action. In his limited time on the floor, he managed to get to the free throw line enough to go 8 of 11 from the charity stripe.
