Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, Calif.) converted a two-point conversion try with 44 seconds left, then watched
Westlake (Westlake Village) quarterback
Nick Isham drive his team down beautifully.
But a 41-yard field goal try with one second left hit the right upright and caromed away.
Oaks Christian 29, Westlake 28.
Before 6,500 fans, this was for the CIF Southern Section Northern Division championship Friday night.
The two schools, located about a quarter-mile apart, played earlier in the year - for the first time ever - and Westlake, then nationally-ranked, pretty much dominated, winning 31-12.
The victory not only avenged that loss but now the Lions (12-2) can throw their names in the CIF Bowl Game Division I mix.
Richie Harrington completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to
Brett Medders with 44 seconds left to close Oaks Christian to within 28-27. Rather than kick for the tie, the Lions put Duke-bound
Blair Holliday into the wildcat formation and he ran it in.
"We went for the two-point conversion because honestly, we didn't think we could hold them in overtime," the always direct and honest Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell told the Los Angeles Times.
Isham (22 of 32, 267 yards) drove his team right down the field, but the field goal painfully clanked off the upright.
Herrington finished 23 of 33 for 310 yards and teammate
Carlos Mendoza rushed for two scores as Oaks Christian took a 21-7 lead.
Two touchdown passes from Isham tied the score at 21, before
Tavior Mowry scored on a 1-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to put Westlake (12-2) up 28-21.
