The Woodlands (Texas) completed its season with a convincing 9-5 win in the Texas Class 5A championship, but the No. 5 Highlanders were unable to move up in the Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings due to a logjam at the top.
Venice, the Florida 7A state champion, is the No. 4 team in the rankings and has a win over The Woodlands from the National High School Invitational. Meanwhile, No. 3 Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) is the Southern Section Division I champion in California and has a win over Venice from the same tournament.
Then there is No. 2 Owasso with a 36-0 record and an Oklahoma state championship and No. 1 Pensacola Catholic with a Florida Class 4A state title and an undefeated 30-0 mark.
Thus The Woodlands stays at No. 5 for the penultimate Xcellent 50 National Rankings.
One Texas team that moved up is Tomball, which won the Class 4A state title and jumps from No. 11 to No. 8. Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati) also moved into the top 10 at No. 7 with a Division I state championship in Ohio.
The final MaxPreps Xcellent 50 National Baseball Rankings will appear next week after the culmination of the Indiana and Michigan state championships. Indiana has a pair of teams in the Top 25 with undefeated Indianapolis Cathedral (28-0) at No. 22 and once beaten Elkhart Central (31-1) at No. 25.
