Montverde Academy returns to the top spot in the National Top 20 basketball rankings after a two-week hiatus from the perch they held for two consecutive wire-to-wire national championship runs. The Eagles once again prove they are the team to beat after picking up a pair of impressive wins at Holiday Hoopsgiving, shellacking Real Salt Lake Academy (Herriman, Utah) 84-39 and besting Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) 70-55.
Montverde will have its top spot tested this week with showdowns against No. 8 Oak Hill Academy (Mouth of Wilson, Va.), No. 2 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) and No. 3 Sunrise Christian Academy (Bel Aire, Kan.) as NIBC play begins Thursday.
Former No. 1 AZ Compass Prep nearly falls out of the top 10 after struggling at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest. The Dragons escaped with a 74-69 victory over McKinney (Texas) before being dismantled 61-38 by Richardson (Texas) the following night. They found very little success on the offensive end against the talented Texas public school.
NIBC play headlines the week ahead as Montverde Academy, IMG Academy, Sunrise Christian Academy, No. 7 La Lumiere (La Porte, Ind.), Oak Hill Academy, No. 11 Wasatch Academy (Mt. Pleasant, Utah) and No. 19 Legacy Early College (Greenville, S.C.) will all compete in conference showdowns.
