The state of Texas dominates the latest record category added to the
MaxPreps National High School Football Record Book — Single-season individual offense. Ken Hall of Sugar Land, the first player to top 5,000 single-season yards, is among 38 Texans players to accomplish the feat on a list that includes 158 total players.
Holder of the national record for career rushing yardage for over six decades, Hall was also a passer for Sugar Land, now called
Fort Bend Dulles (Sugar Land, Texas), during the 1953 season. In addition to rushing for 4,045 yards, Hall also is credited with 1,101 passing yards for a total of 5,146 yards. The first running back to go over 4,000 yards rushing, he's also the first player to have over 5,000 yards of total offense.
MaxPreps National High School Football Record Book: Individual Total OffenseNo one came close to passing Hall's mark for 44 years until Patrick Hutka of
Rogers (Texas), surpassed the mark with 5,959 yards in 1997 on 4,477 yards passing and 1,482 yards rushing.
Hutka held on to the record for four years until Ben Mauk of
Kenton (Ohio) broke the record in 2001 and became the first player with over 6,000 yards of total offense in a season. He ran for 970 yards and threw for 5,570 for 6,727 yards.
A year later, Mauk broke his own mark and became the first player to go over 7,000 yards of total offense. He ran for 1,388 yards and threw for 6,540 for 7,928 yards.
Since 2002, only one player has even come close to Mauk's record, and that's his brother Maty Mauk in 2011 with 1,766 yards rushing and 5,413 yards passing for a total offense of 7,181 yards. The Mauk brothers are the only two players in high school history with over 7,000 yards of total offense.
While 38 Texas players have finished with over 5,000 yards of total offense in a season,
Pulaski Academy (Little Rock, Ark.) puts together an impressive number on the list all by itself. Since 2001, a Pulaski Academy player has gone over 5,000 yards 11 times.
Folsom (Calif.) and Kenton (Ohio) are next on the list with six each.
Among the more notable players on the list include current NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of
Whitehouse (Texas), Kyler Murray of
Allen (Texas), Joe Burrow of
Athens (The Plains, Ohio) and Brock Purdy of
Perry (Gilbert, Ariz.).
