Next week will be all football recruiting with National Signing Day. So we focus this week on Utah’s intense hoops scene and eight games that had a huge impact on their respective regional races.

BINGHAM 74, WEST JORDAN 66
OK, beating the defending 5A champs on their home court is one thing. Doing it with four starters on the bench with five fouls is another. The Miners have some depth and at 14-1, the best record in the state and the Region 3 lead. Memo to refs: 48 fouls and three techs is way too many.
BRIGHTON 71, ALTA 65 (OT)
Corbin Miller in the clutch. Three-pointers on three consecutive trips helped Brighton force overtime and helped the Bengals regain the lead in ultra-competitive Region 4. Miller had 26. The Bengals recovered from a loss to Jordan quite nicely. Don’t count Alta out, either. The Hawks just had a bad overtime period.
WEST 53, MURRAY 39
So Region 2 may not be the most competitive in 5A, but we have to give West some love here. All the 4A champs did is move up to 5A and start a nice little 11-game winning streak. Tyrell Corbin is having a great year. His dad, Tyrone, played for the Utah Jazz.
PROVO 46, TIMPVIEW 32
The Bulldogs made this cross-town rivalry anticlimactic by holding the Thunderbirds to two points in the first quarter ON THEIR HOME FLOOR. Yikes. Here’s the deal about Kyle Collinsworth: There’s no doubt he could light it up for 30 or more a night, but he’s a franchise player who is completely unselfish. Maybe some Web sports geeks would like to see a 40-pointer, but it’s kind of cool to see a 6-foot-6 guy racking up triple-doubles instead. Provo is now 5-0 in Region 7.
SPRINGVILLE 62, PAYSON 56
The Red Devils haven’t made as much as expected, lumbering to 8-6. This road victory at Payson may keep the Region 8 championships hopes alive, but don’t count Uintah, which is tied with Springville atop the standings at 3-1.
MOUNTAIN CREST 40 SKYVIEW 33
Yeah, defense rules at Mountain Crest. The football team scored more. But Mountain Crest is in control of Region 6 with the sweep of Skyview.

MORGAN 53 JUDGE MEMORIAL 46
Morgan remained unbeaten and got the sweep over Judge Memorial in a meeting worthy of a 1-2 matchup. The Trojans completely flustered the Bulldogs with a third-quarter press and kept the state’s purest shooter, Erica Martinez, all but quiet in the second half. Check out this stat line from Morgan’s Ashley Garfield: 17 points, 19 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. Morgan now leads Region 11 by two games.
