MaxPreps Sac-Joaquin Section Top 25 high school football rankings

In the one showdowns of the week within the Sac-Joaquin Section, top-ranked Folsom flexed more than just enough offensive firepower.

It got defensive and hammered previous No. 4 Oak Ridge 35-0.

More Delta River League showdowns loom for Folsom, including No. 14 Jesuit (Carmichael) this week and a Week 10 meeting with No. 3 Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove).

1. (1 last week) Folsom (6-0)
The Bulldogs opened defense of their Delta River League title by belting previous No. 4 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 35-0. The defense, headed by Lukas Hendricks and Eddie Flores, sparkled with batted-down passes and quarterback pressure. Jake Browning passed for 362 yards and three touchdowns but was intercepted four times (he had five total coming in). Still, he made some of the best throws of his career for touchdowns.

2. (2) Elk Grove (6-0)
The Thundering Herd rolled Laguna Creek (Elk Grove) 46-6 behind RB Wadus Parker (243 yards, three touchdowns) and a dominant defense. Shaunard Harts, son of the defensive coordinator by the same name, returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown in the Delta Valley Conference opener.

3. (3) Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) (6-0)
The Eagles opened Delta River League play with a 63-21 rout of Sheldon (Sacramento) as Deaundre Terrell passed for two touchdowns and Ian Broom rushed for 216 yards and four scores. The defense was again strong.

4. (5) Granite Bay (5-1)
The Grizzlies opened defense of their Sierra Foothill League title with a 42-28 victory over Roseville. Ben Smith rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown and Michael Geraghty went for 103 and two scores and Josh Neal provided QB balance.

5. (6) Del Oro (Loomis) (4-2)
The Golden Eagles opened Sierra Foothill League play with a 42-6 rout of Woodcreek (Roseville), storming to a 42-0 halftime lead and playing subs the rest of the way. Dylan Kainrath chugged for 169 yards and four scores, and Jonah Mekebri had two of his team's six sacks. He also had an interception.

6. (4) Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) (5-1)
The Trojans were beaten in a Delta River League opener 35-0 by top-ranked Folsom. Josh Wellman rushed for 109 yards and Drew Lackowski had two of his team's four interceptions. Earlier wins include section-ranked Grant (Sacramento), Rocklin and Vacaville.

7. (7) Grant (Sacramento) (4-2)
The Pacers beat defending Delta Valley Conference champion Franklin (Elk Grove) 30-20 as TieNeal Martin returned two interceptions for touchdowns and kicker Ruben Garza played well in earning high praise from his coaches. Mosese Moala, Chris Atteberry and Deandre Whittington-Grays combined for 34 tackles, and the Pacers recorded five sacks. The losses are to Del Oro (Loomis) and Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills).

8. (8) St. Mary's (Stockton) (4-2)
The Rams opened defense of their Tri-City Athletic league title with a 41-13 victory over previous No. 15 Tokay (Lodi). Kaleb Parrish threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, including an 89-yard burst. The losses are to NorCal No. 1 De La Salle (Concord) and Del Oro (Loomis).

9. (9) Burbank (Sacramento) (4-2)
The Titans rolled Florin (Sacramento) 63-6 in Metropolitan Conference action as Calvin Green returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score and also ran for two rushing touchdowns. He is a Washington State commit. The losses are to higher-ranked Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) and Grant (Sacramento).

10. Central Catholic (Modesto) (6-1)
The Raiders beat Los Banos 20-0 in Western Athletic Conference play as Donovin Townsend passed for a touchdown and also ran for one. Matt Ringer also rushed for a score. This is the last ranked team to not have a bye. That's next. The loss was to St. Mary's (Stockton).

11. (11) Rocklin (4-2)
The Thunder rolled Nevada Union (Grass Valley) 55-7, leading 48-0 at the half. Logan Webb tossed two touchdown passes, Blake Laurin caught three TDs and Evyn Holtz ran for two scores. The losses were to higher-ranked Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) and Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills).

12. (12) Rio Linda (5-1)
The Knights rolled Bella Vista (Fair Oaks) 41-7 in a Capital Valley Conference opener. Marcel Brown rushed for 163 yards on just 11 carries and scored three times and Leonard Skattebo went for 80 and two. Pieter Koopman had 12 tackles. The loss was to then higher-ranked Roseville on a last-play field goal.

13. (13) Manteca (5-1)
The Buffaloes beat longtime Valley Oak League powerhouse Oakdale 35-20 to give coach Eric Reiss his 100th career win and first at The Corral. Alex Laurel rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns and caught a TD from Joe Menzel in a shifting of the VOL guard. The loss was to 4-1 Wilcox (Santa Clara) by a point.

14. (16) Jesuit (Carmichael) (6-0)
The Marauders rolled Ponderosa (Shingle Springs) 35-7 in a Delta River League opener as Ben Parietti rushed for 151 yards and three TDs and power back Beau Bisharat carried six times for 84 yards and a score. QB Jason Elenberger has not been intercepted this season.

15. (18) Inderkum (Sacramento) (4-2)
The Tigers beat previous No. 17 Yuba City 27-18 behind QB C. J. Spencer, who tossed two touchdowns and kept the Honkers off balance, and Marcus Gilbert had his best game as a do-all threat in seizing early control of the Tri-County League title race. Two-way lineman Kenneth Pettis dominated. The losses are to higher-ranked Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove) and Rocklin.

16. (19) Casa Roble (Orangevale) (5-1)
The Rams beat rival Del Campo (Fair Oaks) 35-32 in a Capital Valley Conference opener. Peyton Wilfley passed for 288 yards and three TDs and ran for 88 and two scores. The loss was to Inderkum (Sacramento).

17. (15) Tokay (Lodi) (5-1)
The Tigers fell to No. 8 St. Mary's (Stockton) 41-13, doomed by the skill of the Rams and by turning it over twice inside the red zone, including at the 1-yard line late in the half, trailing 20-6.

18. (20) Stagg (Stockton) (5-1)
The Delta Kings rolled Edison (Stockton) 41-12 in Tri-City League action as Wayne Brooks passed for 295 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 82 and a score. The loss was an opener to Modesto 36-32.

19. (17) Yuba City (5-1)
The Honkers fell to No. 15 Inderkum (Sacramento), 27-18, in what could turn out to be the Tri-County Athletic League championship despite 127 yards and two scores by Omar Herrera. That was the case a year ago, and Yuba City won for its first league title since 1987.

20. (21) American Canyon (5-1)
The Solano County Athletic Conference favorite beat Vallejo 54-21, leading 35-14 at the half. Jomon Dotson rushed for 207 yards on 16 carries and five touchdowns, and Vincent Foster and Tristen LaPlume had four of their team's seven sacks. The loss was to higher-ranked Stagg (Stockton).

21. (22) Vacaville (3-3)
The Bulldogs rolled Vintage (Napa) 49-13 in Monticello Empire League play as Chad Hekking passed for 178 yards and three touchdowns on five completions. The losses are to then No. 4 Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills) 28-14, current No. 4 Granite Bay 46-28 and NorCal-ranked Deer Valley (Antioch) 45-34. Another win was over NorCal-ranked Valley Christian (San Jose) 20-17.

22. (24) Wood (Vacaville) (5-1)
The Wildcats beat Armijo (Fairfield) 45-9 in a Monticello Empire League game. Tyler Bailey passed for 261 yards and four touchdowns and Damon Lewis rushed for 110 yards and a score. The loss was to higher-ranked American Canyon in an opener.

23. (25) Tracy (5-1)
The Bulldogs rolled Franklin (Stockton) 43-7 in San Joaquin Athletic Association play. Nate Jones and Eric Hawkins each rushed for two touchdowns. The loss was to then-ranked Franklin (Elk Grove).

24. (NR) Ripon (7-0)
The small-school Indians of the southern part of the section are rolling all comers under coach Chris Johnson with the statement win coming over longtime powerhouse Escalon 35-3, followed by routs of Modesto Christian, 35-13, and Hughson, 30-14.

25. (NR) Merced (4-2)
The Bears were the highest-ranked team from the 209 in the preseason rankings, started 2-0, then were shelled by Central Section power Edison (Fresno). The other loss is to another Central Section heavy in Clovis North (Fresno). The last win was a good one, 48-12 over Turlock in the Central California Conference with a major test against the defending champions looming.
