The next stop on the sixth-annual MaxPreps Girls Basketball Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard took us to
Post Falls (Idaho).
Coach Marc Allert and his varsity girls basketball team finished their championship season with a 24-1 record and ranked first in the entire state of Idaho. On top of this, the Trojans placed No. 36 in the country according to the
MaxPreps Freeman Rankings and was one of only 10 girls basketball teams honored out of more than 20,000 schools.
On a beautiful day in Idaho, there was a full plate of awards on the table at Post Falls High, including three Gatorade Player of the Year Awards and the MaxPreps Tour of Champions recognition. Phil DeMuro was on site at the high school bright and early with Sgt. Dannie Swanson of the Idaho Army National Guard and the school was buzzing in anticipation. The trophy was set up at lunch and students eagerly stopped by the table to look at the prestigious trophy.
As the end of the day came near, the excitement was building and the gymnasium quickly filled to capacity. As students surrounded the gym and sat on the floor, awards were given out honoring specific players from all different sports including the girls basketball team. Finally after those awards were done, the stage was set for the featured award given by MaxPreps and the Idaho Army National Guard.
As DeMuro began highlighting some of the team's statistics, even the girls and their coach seemed humbled by how big of an honor it was. When DeMuro stated that they were No. 36 in the nation, the entire gym erupted. Sgt. Swanson finished the presentation by congratulating the team and school on their amazing season and spoke about traits like character and teamwork that not only helped them become champions on the basketball court but will help them in life.
After the presentation was finished, the student body spilled onto the court and everyone celebrated the season together as a school. The players and their families took pictures with the trophy and talked about the season and the future. It was a bittersweet moment because many of the players were moving on to college, but this season and this award are two things that these girls will remember forever.
