MaxPreps California Regional Bowl Game Projections Nov. 27

Four of the top 15 teams in the nation are from California.

Fifteen of the 50 teams projected to be part of the CIF Regional Bowl games last week were eliminated in either section semifinal or final games over the weekend.

These spots are being decided on the field rather than on computers — as it should be.

Of those 15 who were eliminated, 10 came from Southern California, including eight in the wild Southern Section playoffs. One was previously unbeaten Upland, which fell 31-24 by Oaks Christian (Westlake Village) in Division 2. Now the team Oaks Christian faces in the D2 championship, Valencia, is projected to play in the CIF Southern 1-AA game against San Diego Section Open finalist Mission Hills.

Several North teams assured themselves of spots in the regional games: Sac-Joaquin Section squads Placer (D4 champion), Bear River (D5) and Hilmar (D6), along with Northern Section champions Shasta (D2), Sutter (D3), East Nicholaus (D4) and Chester (D5). Placer won its first section title since 1981 and Shasta claimed its first NS crowns since 1988. 

McClymonds (Oakland) captured its eighth consecutive Oakland Section crown to punch a ticket into a regional game.

The rest of the field will be filled in this weekend via section championship games with four exceptions. The Open Division runner-ups in the North Coast and Los Angeles City sections will be invited to the tournament, as will two at-large teams selected by the Central Coast Section from its three Open divisions.

The most watched championship game with big national interest will take place Saturday at Cerritos College, where national No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) takes on No. 5 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) for the Southern Section Division 1 crown. Whichever team wins that game will no doubt will be selected into the Southern California Open Division slot, which gets a bye during regional play and moves directly into the state title game to face the Northern California Open selection, which also receives a bye.
