State titles in boys basketball and girls soccer propelled American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.) to the top of the MaxPreps Cup rankings after the conclusion of the winter sports season.
The Patriots jumped from seventh place following the fall sports season to the top spot with 654 points. American Heritage, which had won state titles in football, boys swimming and girls golf during the fall, added two more state titles in the winter.
Carmel (Ind.), the leader after the fall season, is in second place with 618 points. The Greyhounds added a state title in girls swimming to the three titles they won during the fall in boys and girls cross country and girls golf.
Webb (Knoxville, Tenn.) dropped to third place with 551 points. It added a state championship in girls basketball to the four championships it won in the fall.
MaxPreps Cup rankings are compiled by giving schools points for
finishing first or second at the state level. For states that don't have
state competition, point totals were adjusted to award first and
second-place teams at the section level. Points were also awarded for
size of playoff division (championships won at the large school level
were worth more than championships at the small-school level), size of
state (championships for Texas, for example, were worth more than
championships for less populous states like Alaska) and type of sport
(football championships were worth more than tennis championships).
National
rankings were also included in the tabulation of points. The MaxPreps
Computer Rankings for soccer are utilized while the
Xcellent 25 Rankings were used for boys and girls basketball, football and volleyball. Dyestat's national rankings for cross country were also utilized along with The Mat's rankings for wrestling. Not all sports contested at the state level are included in the MaxPreps Cup standings.
