Ky Westbrook, a junior from
Chandler (Ariz.), was the only double winner on Saturday during the Arizona Sprint Showcase, which drew entries from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, California and Colorado.
Despite facing 106-degree heat, Westbrook captured the 100-meter dash in 11.95 seconds and the 200 h in 24.29.
Chandler coach Eric Richardson told MaxPreps, "We got no cooperation from the wind. It was over two meters in most races."
The double victory marked the end of an outstanding year for Westbrook, who also was a double sprint winner at the Division I state meet and during the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, N.C.
At New Balance she won the 100 in 23.92 and the 200 in 11.63. At the state meet she won the 100 in 11.42 - No. 3 all-time - and the 200 in 24.15. She also ran the leadoff leg on the all-underclass 4x100 relay, which was victorious in 46.86. In addition, she placed second in the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 9 3/4 inches.
The Wolves also won their seventh-consecutive Division I team championship.
"We've had a pretty good run," Richardson conceded. "We have mastered the technique of not messing them up."
He predicted a bright future for the powerful 5-foot-10 Westbrook, who has the ability to be outstanding in the heptathlon.
