Bob Hurley’s run at St. Anthony coming to an end?

Is Monday's NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title game his last?

Legendary St. Anthony (Jersey City, N.J.) coach Bob Hurley is raising some questions about his future in advance of Monday's NJSIAA Tournament of Champions title game.

Hurley delivered this surprising quote Sunday to Jim Hague of the Hudson Reporter [see Hague's entire story here]:

"This might be the last one," Hurley told Hague. "If we didn't get this one this year, who knows when the next one would happen? … I'm coming to the fragile end of my coaching career. Who knows if I'll ever be in the same position again? We may not see a championship again for the next couple of years."

Hurley is speaking in terms of championships and not necessarily games. The Friars have won a state title already, beating recent nemesis Roselle Catholic 53-37 on March 13.

However, Hurley is clearly beleaguered by the transfer epidemic in high school basketball and the comments seem to be a departure from the idea that he could make a push for the all-time wins record.

This year's Friars are 31-0 and ranked No. 4 nationally by MaxPreps. St. Anthony meets Linden on Monday night for the NJSIAA Tournament of Champions crown.

A Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, Hurley owns a career record of 1,161-119 and has led St. Anthony to 28 state and 12 TOC championships.

The Friars were tabbed national champions by MaxPreps in back-to-back years following the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons.
