The Brookwood Broncos improved to 5-3 and 5-1 in Regional play with a 9-6 overtime win in sloppy cold conditions over the Dacula Falcons (3-5, 3-3).
In the end it was Wade Brogdon, the do-it-all senior for the Broncos, who got to be the hero. He plays free safety and wide receiver, and kicks field goals and punts. Friday night in a tough road game the senior was a perfect 3-for-3 as he nailed a 27-yarder in overtime to push the Broncos to victory.
"It was tough to kick tonight," Brogdon told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "In warm-ups I fell on my butt a couple of times. It was a great hold by Mike (Moeck) and a great snap by Jake (Moore)."
Bogdon, who also had an interception to stop a Dacula drive earlier in the game, earned further praise from his coach Mark Crews.
"The guy just does so much for us," Crews told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "He'd probably drive the bus if we'd get him a license."
Buford 14, Blessed Trinity 10
Buford still hasn't lost a game in over a year, but it sure came close Friday night.
With under a minute to go in the game and the Wolves trailing 10-7 at home, tailback Cody Getz decided to take the game into his own hands when he broke free for a 51-yard score – his 13th touchdown of the year – and giving the Wolves (8-0, 5-0) their 22nd straight victory.
"That's probably this team's biggest touchdown of the year," Buford head coach Jess Simpson told the Gwinnett Daily Post. "We haven't had to win a game like that in, heck, I don't know when. It was a gut check for our kids."
Blessed Trinity fell to a respectable 6-2 (4-2) and showed that it can hang with Class AA’s No.1-ranked Wolves.
Milton 20, Roswell 19
With just nine seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and trailing archrival Roswell 19-13, Milton was searching for just its fourth win over the Hornets in 27 games. It would have to come at the hands of a miracle.
In this case it was the hands of A.J. Canara, a wide receiver for the Eagles, that caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Perry that led Milton to a dramatic 20-19 victory over the Hornets.
“I’ve been waiting since 1988 to beat these guys,” Eagles coach Scott Walker, a Milton player from 1988-92, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “This place has been waiting for something like this to happen. You can’t ever count my guys out.”
The historic rivalry, which dates back to 1950, totals 54 games including last year's 45-0 Hornet win.
Creekview 42, Pickens 7
Creekview won its fourth-straight game Friday night, improving to 4-4 on the year and 3-1 in region 7-AAA play. During the streak, the Grizzlies have only allowed a total of 14 points.
With two more victories, Creekview can make the playoffs in its first year of eligibility.
Lumpkin County (4-4) and Chestatee (4-4) stand in the way of the young program’s postseason chances.
Lovett 19, GAC 18
The mud-soaked Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans trudged off the field Friday night knowing that the playoffs are no longer an option.
Lovett (5-3, 3-2) looks primed for postseason play now after the victory over GAC (3-5, 2-3). The Lions made a surprising run to the AA title game last year with state coach of the year Mike Muschamp leading the way.
Ealey, ECI Continue Tear
Washaun Ealey and Class A’s top-ranked Emanuel County Institute continued their two-year run of domination with a 40-18 win over Metter Friday night.
Ealey, a University of Georgia commitment, rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns to bring his state-record career total to 115.
A week ago, Ealey broke the record, previously held by Pacelli Catholic’s Matt Dunham. Like the true professional he hopes to be, Ealey set aside record talk to focus on winning football games.
"The record, it's not really being on my mind," Ealey told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "It's a good thing, but we're just trying to win another state championship."
ECI is 8-0 on the season and has won 23-straight games.
