Red Lion Christian Academy continued its surprising fall run with a 33-25 victory over Tatnall in non-conference action Saturday, improving to 6-0 on the season.
Quarterback Francis Drummond had three rushing touchdowns and added more through the air, completing 19 of 34 passes for 258 yards.
Drummond threw six passes to junior Seth Penhollow, who recorded 71 receiving yards and caught a 1-yard fourth down touchdown pass with less than three minutes remaining in the game to put the Lions up 33-17.
Fellow receiver Tommy LeNoir brought in four catches for 85 yards.
The Lions’ offense was held scoreless in the first quarter but then blew up for 20 points in the second, giving Red Lion the momentum it would need to earn a big road win.
With a 6-0 record this season, the Lions have already won two times as many games as they had won in their four previous seasons combined.
Volleyball: St. Mark’s Hands Archmere First Loss
The Spartans defeated the Auks in a thriller on Tuesday which ruined Archmere’s perfect season.
After losing the first two games 16-25 and 23-25, St. Mark’s won the next three games 25-12, 25-19 and 15-10 behind an outstanding effort by Nikki Kinnier, who had 22 kills and 7 blocks.
The Auks were led by Marissa Eppes, who tallied 10 kills, and Cara Eppes, who recorded 37 assists.
Drama ensued in the fourth game when the two teams found themselves deadlocked 17-17. Jenny Murray helped the Spartans win seven of the next eight volleys thanks to 14 kills which eventually forced a deciding fifth game.
Samantha Hall would give the Spartans a 14-10 lead in the fifth game with a kill shot that all but cemented a St. Mark’s victory.
Archmere falls to 11-1 while St. Mark’s improves to 11-2.
Field Hockey: Bulldogs Bite the Tower Hill
Brandywine outplayed Tower Hill 3-1 on Tuesday thanks to a dominant second half performance by the Bulldogs.
Paige Chapman broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half which sparked Brandywine’s offense which proceeded to overpower the Hillers for the remainder of the game.
When Tower Hill was able to advance the ball into Bulldog territory, goalie Julie Dougherty would not be denied as she came up with clutch save after clutch save.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, Alexis Borelli scored Brandywine’s third and final goal. From then on out it was smooth sailing for the Bulldogs as Tower Hill posed no more scoring threats.
Brandywine now sits at 10-1 with Tower Hill now at 8-2.
