Leonard (Greenacres) set a state record when he clocked 15 minutes, 3.01 seconds to win the Class 4A boys race at the state cross-country championships last Saturday. However, Pickering's mark did not stand for long, as William Clark of
Creekside (Jacksonville) later that day eclipsed Pickering's time when he won the Class 3A race in 14:58.87.
Belen Jesuit (Miami) won the Class 3A boys title, its fourth state title in five years.

RECRUITING NEWSDaniel (T.J.) Sapp of Northeast (Oakland Park), one of the top-rated boys basketball players in Broward County, has made a verbal commitment to Clemson. Sapp also was considering scholarship offers from Nebraska, Old Dominion, Murray State, Georgia Southern and Tulane. Sapp, a 6-foot-3 guard, averaged 19.5 points, six rebounds and four assists last season.
"This ACC is the best basketball there is," Sapp told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "You're going to get seen there no matter what, and you're going against the best teams every night. I'm ready for it."
