Forgettable start. Memorable ending.
Perhaps that’s how Jillian Fishbein will remember the 2009 Twin-State All-Star Field Hockey Classic. Although her New Hampshire team trailed Vermont by two goals midway through the first half, Fishbein scored on a breakaway 1:39 into sudden-death overtime to give New Hampshire a 3-2 victory at Keene State College.
Fishbein, who played for St. Thomas Aquinas in Dover, also assisted on the game-tying goal. She will play college field hockey for Quinnipiac University.
“Great quality of play,” Vermont coach Wendy Wannop said. “These were two very skilled teams.”
New Hampshire trailed 2-0 when Merrimack Valley’s Jen Otis put New Hampshire on the scoreboard with 10:15 remaining in regulation. Portsmouth’s Mary Quill tied the game two minutes later.
Portsmouth’s Catherine Sodini, Londonderry’s Emily Baker and Pinkerton Academy’s Julie Medeiros each spent time in the New Hampshire goal. That trio combined to make four saves.
Vermont’s Dani Lewis opened the scoring 7:24 into the contest, and Ashley McLaren made it 2-0 when she scored on a penalty corner with 12:13 remaining in the opening half.
Vermont goalkeepers Jori Farnsworth and Hope Ling combined to make seven saves.
New Hampshire owns a 16-7-3 record in the annual event.
Girls Hockey: Late goals sink New Hampshire
Hanna Martini broke a 1-1 tie with 7:03 left in the third period to help Vermont post a 3-1 triumph over New Hampshire in the 12th Annual Make-A-Wish Girls All-Star Hockey Classic on Saturday at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Vermont doubled its lead when Kelly Whitcomb scored with 37 seconds to play. Lauren Cabanaw scored Vermont’s first goal 8:51 into the opening period, but New Hampshire tied the game when Emilee Martin converted a rebound during a New Hampshire power play in the third.
Martin was Lebanon’s leading scorer in each of the last three seasons, and also leads the program in career goals with 88. Martin regained the lead for Vermont on the shift that following Martini’s goal.
“There was a big range of emotions right there,” New Hampshire coach Jim Hippern (St. Thomas) said. “Now we were right back behind again and had to look for another opportunity.”
Three New Hampshire goaltenders selected to play in the game did not participate because of injuries or other commitments.
Two Vermont residents played goal for New Hampshire: Norwich’s Aviva Gottesman and Colchester’s Brittany Rocheleau. Gottesman attended Hanover High School.
The victory gave New Hampshire a 5-4-3 edge in the series.
Boys Hockey: New Hampshire routs Vermont
A six-goal third period carried New Hampshire to an 8-0 victory over Vermont in the 17th Annual Make-A-Wish Boys All-Star Hockey Classic on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Timberlane’s Ryan Rothwell and Bishop Guertin’s Dave O’Brien combined to make 15 saves for New Hampshire. It was the first time either team was shut out in the event’s history.
Sean White (Bishop Guertin), J.B. Mulvey (Manchester West), Trevor DeVitto (Timberlane), Brandon Guidotti (Lebanon), Jason Carace (Pinkerton) and Jack Mullen (Concord) scored third-period goals for New Hampshire, which leads the series 10-6-1.
