Already the home of the winningest high school football coach in Texas history,
Calallen (Corpus Christi) is now home to the state's winningest baseball coach as well.
Calallen's come-from-behind 2-1 win over Boerne in the Region IV-4A semifinals Saturday not only lifted the Wildcats to the next round of the state playoffs, it moved their coach Steve Chapman into sole possession of the most baseball wins in state history.
Chapman's 1,116 wins (1,116-260-5) move him out of a tie with longtime
Monterey (Lubbock) coach Bobby Moegle, who won 1,115 games between 1960 and 1999. In his 40 years of coaching, all spent at Calallen, Chapman has led the Wildcats to 31 consecutive playoff appearances, 29 district titles and three state championships.
Calallen was already home to the state's winningest football coach, Phil Danaher. The longtime Wildcat mentor retired following the 2021 season with 490 wins in his 48 years of coaching, 38 at Calallen.
It should be noted that Leta Andrews, the nation's all-time leader in girls basketball wins, also spent time at Calallen. During her 52-year career, she spent 13 seasons with the Wildcats, winning her only state championship in 1990. She finished her career with 1,416 wins (1,416-355).
Calallen defeated Boerne 12-6 on Thursday to put Chapman in a tie with Moegle at 1,115. After a 3-2 loss on Saturday, Calallen won the rubber game 2-1 with a run in the seventh inning.
Calallen moves on to play Sinton in the Region IV finals on Thursday.

Calallen picked up a huge playoff win Saturday to bring Steve Chapman's win total to 1,117.
