The Miramonte Matadors (12-1) hosted the Acalanes Dons (7-11) last Thursday at the Matadome. The Mats came out ready to play after beating league rivals Campolindo and Dublin three games to zero in their previous matches.
The Mats started game one hot going up on the Dons 9-4 with kills from senior captains Juliana Stivanicevic and Mary Diamantidis. The Dons started to fight back getting the score to 14-8 before the Mats pulled away again. The game was then dominated by the Matadors until the end when the Dons fought back getting the score to 24-17 before a big block by Audrey Breitweiser put the game away with the Mats winning the first one 25-17.
The second game started out differently with the Dons taking their first and only lead of the night going up 1-0 on a Mats defensive mishap. The Mats then took back control of the match and the game and were once again up 9-4 before the Dons even looked like they had any signs of life in them. The Dons attempted to fight back getting the score to 15-10 with help from Caroline Appert who recorded four kills. The Mats defense stepped up from there and went on to an easy 25-16 win.
The third game was much the same, as the Dons team ran out of gas. The Mats took this game easily winning 25-9 with key performances from seniors Stivanicevic, Diamantidis and Haley Sayres. Issabelle Shapiro put the game away with an ace and the match ended much of the same as all of the league matches for the Mats have this year, three games to zero.
Key offensive players for Miramonte were Stivanicevic who recorded 14 kills, Diamantidis with 6 kills, and Sayres with 5 kills and 2 aces. They were assisted with some defensive help from senior Lisa Gilbert and Junior defensive specialist Jane Siri.
The Mats look to stay undefeated in league against 4-8 Las Lomas and 0-5 Alhambra this week, while the Dons look to wipe away this loss with win number 8 against Daugherty Valley.
