William Penn captured its fifth consecutive conference win Friday night, defeating Middletown 10-3 at Bill Billings Alumni Stadium.
Brian Fields showed incredible versatility by recording a game high 133 rushing yards on 20 carries in addition to two interceptions on defense.
The Colonials struck first with a 75-yard touchdown run by Fields in the opening quarter. The running back was literally untouched as he scored the game’s first and only touchdown.
Middletown’s offense was kept in check by the Colonial defense throughout most of the game. The Cavaliers did manage to put their only points on the board late in the second quarter thanks to a 25-yard field goal by Scott Adkins.
In the second half, the Colonials used Fields to drain the clock, and the defense swallowed up the Cavaliers on every drive. A 32-yard Dan Shorter field goal gave William Penn a seven-point lead and ultimately another Blue Hen Flight A victory.
Fields had a remarkable game, but William Penn’s defense shouldn’t be overlooked. The Colonials held Middletown to 195 yards of total offense, intercepted quarterback Kenny Anderson four times and limited Anderson to only 77 yards and a 6-of-23 performance.
William Penn is gaining momentum at 5-2, 5-0 in conference. The Cavaliers are a far cry from the team that won the state championship last season, but are still alive at 4-3 and 4-1 in conference.
