Jefferson (Tampa, Fla.) at No. 12 St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio)Jefferson
graduated a whopping 21 of 22 starters off last year's team that went
15-0, won the 3A championship, and set a state record with 746 points
scored. In addition, the Dragons had to replace their coach after Mike
Fenton stepped down. While first-year coach Jeremy Earle did not inherit
much experience, his squad does have a lot of team speed, some good
skill players, and one of Florida's top recruits in senior tight
end/defensive
Tyriq McCord (6-4, 225). The Dragons bounced back from a
38-18 loss in their opener to Robinson (Tampa) by slipping past Newsome
(Lithia), 22-21, in their last game on Sept. 9. McCord caught the
game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minute to play.
St.
Edward is building momentum as
it enters the toughest portion of its schedule. The Eagles shut out
Elder (Cincinnati) in the second half of a 30-10 victory last Saturday.
Running behind St. Ed's massive offensive line that features four
BCS-caliber recruits, junior
Dwayne Aaron gained more than 200 yards on the
ground against Elder. It was the 19th consecutive win for Ohio's
reigning Division I state champion. The Eagles are 16-1 against non-Ohio
teams since 2004, including a 14-7 win against Florida's
Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood) in 2006.
