Approximately 400 students, faculty and parents were in attendance as MaxPreps and the Georgia Army National Guard joined forces in celebrating Meadowcreek boys basketball at a pep rally in the school's auditorium. Before the celebration began, Sergeant First Class Doug Bushey of the Georgia Army National Guard handed out commemorative Tour of Champions t-shirts to Mustang players and coaches.
Meadowcreek athletic director Dr. LaShawn Smith then introduced MaxPreps representative Dean Craig, who opened the celebration by sharing MaxPreps' process for determining the team rankings for the Tour of Champions. After discussing the tremendous accomplishments of head coach Curtis Gilleylen and the Mustang basketball team, Craig introduced SFC Bushey to present the Army National Guard national ranking trophy and a nationally ranked rafter banner to Gilleylen and the Mustangs.
Gilleylen shared his thoughts about the great season and expressed his thanks to all of those who helped make the team successful. Following the ceremony, Gilleylen, his staff and Mustang players posed for pictures as the crowd cheered. Gilleylen and one of his Mustang players stuck around for interviews and both were extremely thankful to MaxPreps and the Army National Guard for recognizing the Mustangs as one of the nation's elite boys basketball teams. TNT/NBA TV host Beau Estes, a member of Meadowcreek's first boys basketball team, was emcee of the program in which the Mustangs received their state championship rings as well. Congratulations to Coach Gilleylen and the Meadowcreek boys basketball team on your first state championship, and for being recognized as one of this year's best teams!
