As Saturday’s Kansas state football championship results became reality, there weren’t a lot of surprises. Sure, Smith Center’s 79-game winning streak came to a close with its 20-12 overtime loss to Centralia.
But the other top-ranked teams in last weekend’s title matches went home victorious.
Olathe North took home the top prize in Class 6A, Hutchinson dominated once again in 5A and Bishop Miege rolled through the playoffs after competing against strong competition during the regular season.
Eighth-ranked Centralia and third-ranked Wichita Collegiate, a 37-30 winner over Marysville in Class 3A, were the only winners not ranked at the top of the class.
Below is a game-by-game look at how the state title games played out.
Class 6A – Olathe North 37, Wichita Heights 3
James Franklin’s run through the Olathe North record books and over opposing playoff foes ended with the school’s first Class 6A state football title since winning four straight from 2000-2003. Franklin was at his best Saturday as he battered Wichita Heights for 269 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 32 carries in a 37-3 win. The 5-foot-8, 176-pound senior ran the ball 113 times for 851 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in four playoff games, boosting his school career rushing record to 5,914 yards. Franklin, who finished the season with 2,801 yards rushing, opened Saturday’s championship action with a 25-yard scoring jaunt in the first quarter. Following Heights kicker Chris Farley’s 28-yard field goal, the Eagles scored the final 30 points of the game.
Class 5A – Hutchinson 52, Gardner-Edgerton 14
The Salt Hawks once again displayed why they are the best team in Kansas, and possibly beyond, routing undefeated Gardner-Edgerton by scoring the game’s final 45 points. Trailblazer signal-caller Bubba Starling put his team up 14-7 when he connected with Justice Berry and Brett Jensen for 29- and 32-yard scoring strikes. But Hutchinson running back Deveon Dinwiddie tied the score with a 59-yard run and put his team up for good after catching a 43-yard reception from Hutchinson signal caller Cooper Bell. The state championship win was the sixth straight for the Salt Hawks, including four straight 6A titles from 2004-2007.

Class 4A – Bishop Miege 28, Topeka Hayden 6
As defending champion Topeka Hayden blanketed Bishop Miege receiver and Oklahoma recruit Justin McCay, Alabama basketball recruit Trevor Releford, Jamie Kostelac and Seamus Martin burned the Wildcats for four scoring receptions, collectively. With the win, the Stags secured their first football championship since 1977. Kostelac scored on a five-yard strike from Bishop Miege signal-caller Max Shortell and an 86-yard reception in the second quarter. McCay finished the game with 45 yards on four catches, but was kept out of the end zone. Shanan Engroff helped Topeka Hayden avoid the shutout when he reeled in a three-yard pass from John Bannister.
Class 3A – Wichita Collegiate 37, Marysville 30
Brett LeMaster scored every which way he could, except on defense, leading the Spartans to a 37-30 state championship win over Marysville Saturday. LeMaster returned a kickoff 99 yards for a score and then added an 80-yard punt return with the same result. His 19-yard reception in the opening quarter put Wichita Collegiate on the scoreboard for the first time in the game, giving the Spartans a 7-3 advantage.
Class 2-1A – Centralia 20, Smith Center 12 OT
As Centralia’s Tyler Gleason fell on Colt Rogers overtime fumble, it all came to an end. The nation-leading 79-game winning streak. The attempt at a sixth straight Kansas 2-1A state football championship. They had just been dashed when the Panther covered the ball for a 20-12 Centralia win. Panther quarterback Tyler Glatczak sealed Centralia’s first state title when he raced up the middle on second down for a 9-yard scoring run in overtime. "It’s over," Redmen coach Roger Barta told the Wichita Eagle of Smith Center’s streak. "We played 80 teams and finally there was one that got us."
