High school football: No. 2 Bishop Gorman wins abbreviated opener 41-0 ahead of matchup with No. 1 St. John Bosco next week

Lightning and inclement weather put a halt to Friday's opener at halftime but stage is set for MaxPreps Game of the Week showdown.

No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.) opened its season with a 41-0 win over Somerset Academy Losee (North Las Vegas, Nev.) on Friday in a game that was called off at halftime due to lightning.

The outing was a tune-up of sorts for the Gaels ahead of a showdown against No. 1 St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in the MaxPreps Game of the Week.

Bishop Gorman junior Ace Amina threw for a touchdown in his first start at quarterback for the Gaels and led them on four more scoring drives. He takes over this season for Maika Eugenio, who threw for over 3,000 yards with 42 touchdowns a year ago.

The Gorman defense didn't allow a point after pitching seven shutouts in 2025 en route to an 11-1 record. The Gaels finished No. 3 in 2025 with the only loss coming to Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 27-24.

Next week will be the season opener for St. John Bosco, which is coming off a 9-2 season under head coach Jason Negro. The Braves lost their top three wide receivers to graduation but return quarterback Koa Malau'ulu. As a sophomore last year, the three-star signal caller tossed 33 touchdowns against five interceptions.

This will be the 16th time that No. 1 has squared off against No. 2 since 2000. St. John Bosco has appeared in eight battles between the nation's top teams while Bishop Gorman is appearing in its third.

The Gaels scored early and often Friday as Amina found freshman Michael Blackmond from 11 yards out to open the scoring 7-0.

Gorman quickly made it 14-0 when junior UNLV commit Azavier McDaniel returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown before the first quarter was at its midway point.

After a lightning delay that lasted about 90 minutes, the Gaels kept the scoring going with a pair of junior running backs. First Noah Cole rushed the ball in to make it 21-0. Then just minutes later, Corey Hinton Jr. bustled up the middle for a score to go up 28-0 with 8:18 left in the second quarter.

The defense continued to dominate for Bishop Gorman as sophomore Braylon Ivory blocked the ensuing punt to set up a 2-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Chance Thomas, a Kansas commit, on his first play of the game.

Freshman running back Trey Washington got in on the fun and scored his first career touchdown by running the ball in from 27 yards out with 2:19 left in the first half. 

After a lengthy discussion at halftime, the game was called with the score 41-0.
