In case there were any lingering thoughts about Armwood’s return to the top of the Tampa Bay prep football scene, they were put to rest Friday night.

Armwood (Seffner) used its punishing, opportunistic defense and just enough offense to beat
Plant (Tampa) 17-0 on the Panthers' home field. Armwood safety
Leon McQuay intercepted Plant quarterback Phillip Ely three times and the Hawks' defense limited Plant running back James Wilder, Jr. to just 23 yards before he left in the second quarter with an ankle injury.
Armwood's defense allowed just 69 yards total offense. Meanwhile, on offense, the Hawks got a 25-yard touchdown run from
Kyle Wilcox and a scoring pass from
Josh Grady to
Ronnie Thomas.
Armwood, state champions in 2003 and 2004, improved to 4-0. Plant, title winners in 2006 and 2008-09, slumped to 3-2 on the year.
It had been six years since Plant suffered a shutout. The last defense to do it? Armwood’s – in a 49-0 beatdown on Oct. 29, 2004.
