The Stoneman Douglas High School girls basketball team was set to take on Cypress Bay in Florida's Class 9A state regional quarterfinals Feb. 15.
The contest was never played due to the mass shooting Feb. 14 that took the lives of 17 students and adults at the South Florida school. Among those injured was junior Maddy Wilford, a member of the girls basketball team.
Stoneman Douglas didn't get its playoff opportunity, understandably forfeiting the game against Cypress Bay – which moved on to face Deerfield Beach in the regional semifinals Wednesday.
Deerfield Beach won the game but the result was secondary. Both schools are within 25 miles of Stoneman Douglas and they teamed to honor the victims prior to tip-off.
A team from Maine rallied support for Wilford, wearing shirts reading "Fight Like Maddy" prior to a game earlier this week.
The Florida Panthers and Major League Baseball are among many professional sports organizations that have stepped up to honor the victims of the shooting.
