Ron Tanner, the nation’s No. 79 recruit from the Class of 2011 according to MaxPreps.com recruiting expert Tom Lemming, has picked his hometown Ohio State Buckeyes.
The hard-hitting 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensive back from
Eastmoor Academy (Columbus, Ohio), picked the Buckeyes over Arizona State, Michigan State, Northwestern and Stanford.
He’s the third player from Lemming’s Top 100 list to commit to the Buckeyes.
According to the
Columbus Dispatch, Tanner, the eighth-ranked defensive back in the country, actually put on a Michigan cap during his announcement at Eastmoor Academy on Friday.
Tanner donned the cap to stir a reaction, which it did, drawing groans and boos before a friend snapped on an Ohio State lid.
“I am at home, literally and hypothetically speaking,” he told the newspaper. “Being on campus, it seems like it’s the right place for me.”
Tanner is the Ohio State’s 17th recruit from the 2011 class and 12th from Ohio. He joins fellow Columbus standout Nick Vannett, a tight end from
Westerville Central.
Other future Ohio State players from Lemmings' list is the top-rated quarterback
Braxton Miller (No. 8 overall) from
Wayne (Huber Heights, Ohio) and offensive lineman
Michael Bennett (Centerville, Ohio), who is No. 91 overall.
According to Lemming, Tanner is one of the hardest hitters in the Midwest. “He’s a great decision-maker and has exceptional footwork,” Lemming said.
