Whitefish Bay captured its first state championship in program history, topping
Beaver Dam 64-63 in the Division 2 state title game.
The Blue Dukes scored the final four points of the game after trailing 63-60 with 1:44 remaining to take home their first gold ball in the program's ninth appearance at the state tournament.
Four players reached double figures, paced by senior
Sage Miskel, who netted a team-high 18 points for Whitefish Bay, including scoring the last four points, the second being the go-ahead basket with 43 seconds left. Miskel also contributed six rebounds and two steals.
Junior
Madeline Volpe contributed 12 points, shooting four of seven from three, to go along with three assists and two steals.
Other key contributors for coach Jon Schneider and the Blue Dukes included juniors
Rowan Counsell and
Carrington Balthasar, who each tallied 10 points. Counsell also collected 10 rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Beaver Dam was led by junior
Joelee Droznek and senior
Nataya Donaldson, who finished with 19 and 14 points, respectively. Donaldson, a UW-Milwaukee signee, also pulled down 13 rebounds. The Golden Beavers finish the season with a 23-7 record.
Whitefish Bay ends the year with a 26-4 record, winning its first state championship in trip number nine to the state tournament.
