MaxPreps Student SectionIt all started on a cold day in the year 1996 when the ground was finally broken for the, World Class,
Lone Peak (Highland, Utah) High School. This was the beginning of a great sports tradition. Their rivalry with American Fork and Pleasant Grove started quickly and the state championships began to roll in.
Lone Peak High School earned its first state championship trophy, when the girls swimming pulled of an amazing win in 1998. From then on, the Knights have had some great athletes in many different sports along the way. Names such as; Sam Burgess, Jackson Emery, Tyler Haws, and most recently Jacob Hannemann. Sam Burgess went to Lone Peak from 1998 to 2001 and earned first-team all-state honors in three sports: football, basketball, and baseball. He helped lead the Knights basketball team to its first state title in 2001, and was named the "2001 Salt Lake Tribune Utah Male Prep Athlete of the Year". Burgess also led the Knights to back-to-back state baseball championships and to the quarterfinals in football, as the quarterback.
Jackson Emery went to Lone Peak from 2002 to 2005, and earned an All-American nomination his senior year among other awards. These consisted of the 2005 Deseret News Mr. Basketball, The Salt Lake Tribune 4A-MVP, and the Daily Herald All-Valley team. Emery led the Knights to their second state championship in 2005, while averaging 20.8 ppg. He graduated being the leader of the all-time steals. He is now the third leading scorer due to being recently passed by his little brother Nick Emery, who's a sophomore.
Tyler Haws was the all-time leading scorer in Lone Peak history with an astounding 1,772 points. Haws was nick-named Deseret News "Mr. Basketball" as a junior and a senior. This was only the second time in Utah history for an athlete to win that award back-to-back years. He led the Knights to two state championships and one second place finish. Tyler was also nick-named Daily Herald "All-Valley Player of the Year" and "Gatorade Utah Boys Basketball Athlete of the Year" as a junior and senior. Haws is currently going to Brigham Young University and plays basketball.
Jacob Hannemann went to Lone Peak High School from 2007 to 2010 and played football and baseball. He was offered a football scholarship at BYU and also given the chance to be a new slugger on the cougar's baseball line-up. Hannemann won "Athlete of the Year" and many other state honors while attending Lone Peak. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals directly out of high school but turned down the offer to serve an LDS Mormon Mission. He currently continues his education and athletics at BYU.
Lone Peak has had many great athletes. They have won 26 State Championships in the 14 years of existence. Three of which have happened this year: boys golf, girls volleyball, and boys basketball. And the baseball team is looking at earning Lone Peak its fourth state championship this year.
All in all, Lone Peak is a high school of great academic and athletic success throughout the years and watch out because it is going to keep on coming.
