Video: Meghan Luper's highlights vs. Lincoln High School
See the Fremont High player in action against Lincoln High.No one will ever accuse Elm Creek's Claire Cornell of being a quiet, shy freshman on the basketball court. Nor will they charge her with going into a sophomore slump.
In just the third game of her prep basketball career, Cornell bullied Sumner-Eddyville-Miller into submission as she attained the first triple-double of her career with 25 points, 17 rebounds and 10 steals in a 62-42 win.
Last month the sophomore forward did it once again after ripping the cords for 13 points, grabbing 15 rebounds and swiping 10 enemy balls to go along with a pair of assists in a 55-53 Buffalo win over Alma, netting her the top spot in MaxPreps' Top 10 Nebraska individual girls basketball performances to date.
A sure-bet all state candidate in 2015-16, Cornell is averaging 15.2 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.1 steals per game as Elm Creek is off to a 10-2 start. Including the triple-double, Cornell has posted four double-doubles through Jan. 9.
Harvard's McKenna Schuck made a push for the top spot after she relentlessly crashed the boards and eventually pulled down a school-record 30 rebounds, which ranks fourth on the Nebraska School Activities Association's all-time single game chart, in a 52-29 loss to Wilcox-Hildreth. The 6-foot senior wasn't shy on offense either, scoring all but 10 of her team's points.
Chambers/Wheeler Central's Dawn Klabenes could not be denied the third rung in this week's Top 10 after she made a strong case for the top spot by scorching the nets for 43 points and pulling down 18 rebounds to help the Renegades upend West Holt 79-53 in mid-December. The 5-10 senior added three steals and a blocked shot to her stat line in the 26-point win.
Kimball's Danika Daum, who earlier this year had scored 40 points in a win over Morrill, and Meghan Luper of Fremont each produced double-20 performances in the early portion of their teams' schedules to round out the top five.
This week's Top 10 stat lines were drawn from MaxPreps' stat leader pages and only those games that concluded Jan. 9 or sooner were eligible.
