LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Crenshaw High School football team finished the 2007 season with a disappointing semifinal loss to eventual City Section champion Birmingham Nov. 30.
But the Cougars aren’t waiting until Sept. 5 – when they open the 2008 season against Lakewood – to begin the redemption process. Riding the arm of quarterback and event MVP Marquis Thompson, Crenshaw defeated Upland, 21-19, to win the adidas 7-on-7 tournament held Saturday and Sunday at Loyola Marymount University.
Both Crenshaw and Upland will advance to the national championship in Atlanta July 30-31.
“This is the second tournament we have won this summer and I feel we’re playing better and better each game,” Crenshaw’s Thompson said. “With the high level of competition we’re going to be tested and ready to go at the start of the season.”
Crenshaw and Upland were joined by Clovis West, Crespi, Roosevelt and Washington Prep in the tournament field.
The Los Angeles regional tournament was the first of five adidas 7-on-7 regional tournaments. Subsequent regional competitions will take place at University of Notre Dame (June 20-21), University of Central Florida (June 28-29), Texas A&M University (July 10-12) and the University of Tennessee (July 18-19). The top two teams from each region will advance to Atlanta.
