A night after knocking off nationally-ranked
Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) in the semifinals, Bishop Manogue was unable to muster the same kind of magic against Canyon Springs in the Class 4A state championship game.
The Pioneers received big performances from senior guards
Michael Thompson (19 points) and
Jared Brandon (18) to finish the season 29-2.
Canyon Springs led 29-14 at the half and exploded for 32 third-quarter points to put the game out of reach.
The North Las Vegas school opened in 2004 and has already established a strong basketball tradition. The Pioneers are averaging over 25 wins per season since 2007 and count University of Idaho guard Deremy Geiger among their alums. University of Arizona 1,200-yard wide receiver Juron Criner is listed on the team's 2006-07 roster.
