Football returns to South Dakota next week as the 2020 high school football season is scheduled to kickoff Aug. 20 in the Mount Rushmore State. Defending state champions make up four of the top six spots in South Dakota's preseason rankings.
Top-ranked Bridgewater/Emery Ethan (Emery), No. 2 Canton, No. 4 O'Gorman (Sioux Falls) and No. 6 Riggs (Pierre) each look to defend their titles beginning in prime position to continue their success from last season.
Bridgewater/Emery/Ethan looks to defend its Class 11B state title, trying to fend off defending state finalists Winner, which begins the season ranked No. 5 in the state after a 21-14 loss in the state title game last season.
Riggs enters the 2020 season on a 16-game winning streak with three consecutive state championships in Class 11AAA.
