Caravel (Bear, Del.) poured across 11 points in 12 seconds to shock Delmar (Del.), during the first round of the
Division II state football playoffs, 21-18.
The unbeaten Buccaneers trailed 18-10 and were faced with a fourth-and-3 situation when
Derrick Groomes lofted a short pass to junior running back
Pierce Ripanti, who eluded a tackle at the Delmar 40-yard line and broke free for a 50-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game.
Chris Wickes ran for a 2-point conversion to tie the score at 18.
Following the kickoff, Delmar lost the ball on a fumble at its 16-yard line. One play later - with just 18 seconds left -
Lance Berry kicked the game-winning field goal from 34 yards. The game ended with Delmar's desperation pass falling incomplete.
Caravel coach Bill Martin told News Journal sportswriter Brad Myers, "It just says a lot about the heart of this team. They never gave up. I can't say enough about them. This is a special team and this is a special season here at Caravel."
