DeMatha shut out Paul VI 42-0 and Good Counsel took care of Bishop O'Connell 35-8, but McNamara and Gonzaga fought deep into the second half before a winner was decided. Sloppy conditions contributed to multiple dropped passes and turnovers by both teams; however, a strong effort on the ground from McNamara junior running back Hannibal Robinson sealed the deal as visiting Bishop McNamara defeated Gonzaga 28-14 in Northwest Washington on Saturday afternoon.
Robinson ran all over Gonzaga, recording a career-high 317 yards on 27 carries and two touchdowns.
"Hannibal is one of the hardest-working kids on our team," McNamara head coach Bryce Bevill said. "For the most part, he carried us out there."
Fourth-quarter touchdowns by Robinson and receiver Brandon Coleman were the deciding factors in the game.
"We kept believing," said Coleman. "Even when we were down, we kept fighting. We came here to ball and we left with a win."
In DeMatha's victory, the Stags were led by senior running back Marcus Coker (an Iowa commit), who carried 15 times for 246 yards and four touchdowns as DeMatha cruised to an easy win. Good Counsel had two running backs go over 100 yards on the afternoon as Wes Brown (14 carries, 148 yards, two touchdowns) and Michael Nittoli (six carries, 104 yards, two touchdowns) split time in the backfield.
The final game of the weekend was played between the St. John's Cadets and the Archbishop Carroll Lions, and the Cadets left North Capital Street with another big win over the Lions, 49-14. Senior running back Charles Brown led the way with 20 carries for 173 yards and four touchdowns.
Conference play will continue this weekend with DeMatha hosting Gonzaga, Good Counsel traveling to McNamara, Paul VI playing at St. John's and Carroll taking on O'Connell.
