Charlie Woods helped
Benjamin (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) win a state title last fall and this summer he has qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur, a tournament father Tiger Woods won three times.
If Charlie Woods can win the title at Oakland Hills Country Club in July, he could join Tiger at the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Tiger missed the cut at this year's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2.
The first step for the younger Woods was winning his qualifier Wednesday. The sophomore shot a 1-under 71 at Eagle Trace Golf Club to beat a field of 85 golfers.
Charlie Woods now competes in the 264-player field from July 22-27 at Oakland Hills against the best 19-and-younger players. The field plays two rounds of stroke play on the North and South courses before the top 64 compete in match play on the South course.
Tiger Woods, who owns 15 major championships, won three U.S. Junior Amateur titles (1991-93) as well as three U.S. Amateur titles (1994-96).
In November, Charlie Woods posted a 154 (78-76) to help Benjamin capture Florida's Division I state championship. While there was no state championship in California when Tiger played, he won the Southern Section individual title three times in 1991, 1993 and 1994. As a high school sophomore, he made his first PGA appearance playing in the 1992 Los Angeles Open at Riviera.
