Vermont’s South team had plenty of offense in the second game of last weekend’s North/South All-Star Baseball Games, but where was that offense in the opening contest?
After dropping a 12-0 decision in the first game, the South bounced back to post a 12-4 triumph in the second half of the doubleheader.
Mount Abraham’s Ben Orvis and Vergennes’ Cameron Curler combined on a four-hitter to propel the North to its victory. Orvis struck out four and allowed one hit in five innings. Curler struck out three and surrendered two hits in the final two innings.
Spaulding’s Ruben Stone led the North offense with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. South Burlington’s Andrew Tranmer also scored two runs.
The South scored seven runs in the sixth inning to secure the victory in Game 2. Mount Anthony’s Corey Armstrong picked up the win for holding the North hitless in three innings of relief. Proctor’s Ryan Carter had two hits, including a two-run home run. Curler led the North offense with three hits.
Softball: North splits with South
Each team picked up a 4-3 victory in the North/South All-Star Softball Games.
St. Johnsbury Academy’s Kasandra Locke scored on Danyelle Shufelt’s suicide squeeze in the ninth inning to give the North the victory in the opener. Locke, who collected two hits in the game, also scored the run that made it a 3-3 contest.
Missisquoi’s Danielle Magnant earned the win for pitching five innings of relief. Magnant allowed four hits and struck out four.
Rutland’s Megan Blongy had two hits for the South. A four-run fourth inning helped the South prevail in the second contest.
Springfield’s Brianna Gunn, Mount Anthony’s Michelle King and Middlebury’s Heather Bagley each had an RBI for the South in the victory. Hartford’s Ainsley MacDonald earned the win.
Locke and Ashton Hubbard (Missisquoi) each had two hits and two stolen bases for the North in the loss. Hubbard also scored twice.
Ice Hockey: Martini propels Vermont girls
The Vermont girls prevailed and the Vermont boys were shut out in this year’s Make-A-Wish All-Star Hockey Classic games played at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Two third-period goals handed the girls a 3-1 triumph. After New Hampshire’s Emilee Martin tied the game, Harwood’s Hanna Martini gave Vermont a 2-1 lead on the following shift.
Vermont received a goal from Kelly Whitcomb (U-32) with 37 seconds to play. Lauren Cabanaw (Essex) also scored for Vermont, which trails 5-4-1 in the series.
Eight different players scored to lead the New Hampshire boys to an 8-0 victory. Vermont surrendered six third-period goals. New Hampshire leads that series 10-6-1.
Field Hockey: Vermont falls in OT
Vermont failed to protect a two-goal advantage and dropped a 3-2 decision to New Hampshire in the Twin State All-Star Field Hockey Classic at Keene State College.
New Hampshire, which trailed 2-0 in the second half, prevailed when Jillian Fishbein scored in overtime. The victory gave New Hampshire a 16-7-3 lead in the all-time series. Dani Lewis (Woodstock) and Ashley McLaren (Essex) scored for Vermont. Fishbein played for St. Thomas Aquinas in Dover. Merrimack Valley’s Jen Otis and Portsmouth’s Mary Quill also scored for New Hampshire.
