Mossi Johnson of Crenshaw scores TD trifecta against Banning

LOS ANGELES — Football fans who came out to see a football game between Banning (Wilmington, Calif.) and Crenshaw (Los Angeles) got a little bonus showing of a show that could be big some day: The Mossi Johnson show.

Johnson achieved a unique type of trifecta Friday in a 54-28 victory, playing a role in three touchdowns in three different ways: Passing, interception return and punt return.

It all came in a flash for Johnson, too. The 6-foot-1, 169-pound junior athlete scored both of his return touchdowns within 1 minute, 47 seconds in the third quarter. Those touchdowns were part of a 25-0 third quarter that changed a 14-7 Crenshaw deficit into a 32-14 lead.

Johnson jumped from the free safety spot in the third quarter and hauled in an interception that he took 50 yards down the sideline for a touchdown with 7:42 left in the third quarter. Banning ran three plays before lofting a high, short punt that went no more than 30 yards. Johnson hauled it in, ran right, reversed field and turned on the jets for another score.

The passing TD came in the first quarter when he lofted a perfect jump-ball to Dominique Hatfield for a 37-yard score on third-and-8.

Johnson finished with a 3-for-7 passing night along with 66 yards and an interception.

Banning is a program looking to get back to winning as it has had just one winning season in the past seven. Things looked good early, as quarterback Sergio Ramirez found Keith Wheatly for a 21-yard scoring pass on the game's first drive. Ramirez kept it himself for a 7-yard score in the second quarter and Banning held a 14-7 lead at the half.

Then it became all about Crenshaw. Johnson's two return scores grabbed the lead for the home team and after that there were two running touchdowns and two interception returns for scores.

Ramirez passed for three touchdowns on the night, though he also tossed four interceptions.
