Chase Fischer of
Ripley (W.Va.) opened his senior season with 58 points Thursday night in an 87-67 win over
St. Albans, breaking his own brother's single-game 3-point record in the process.
Fischer, a 6-foot-3 guard, drilled 12 shots from beyond the 3-point arc to break brother Noah's previous school record of 11. The 58 points was also a school record.
"It was one of those surreal-type feelings," Ripley assistant coach Brian Johnson said. "He had six 3-pointers and 23 points in the first quarter. We had 27 as a team."
Noah Fischer is a sophomore at Marshall, where Chase also once committed before opening his recruitment and deciding on the Demon Deacons.
"We knew that his brother had the record," Johnson said. "He had 10 (threes) at halftime, so barring a total collapse, we figured the record was going to fall."
Fischer connected on 20 of 31 attempts from the field with 22 coming from long distance. He also collected seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
The performance is likely to add to his growing legend in the small town of Ripley, population 3,263 according to Wikipedia.
"You could say he is larger than life in a small town like Ripley," Johnson said. "He and his brother transferred in from a small community nearby when he was a sophomore and the brother combination took the basketball program by storm.
"We've watched him grow into the player he is. He made huge leaps from his sophomore to junior year and it looks like that might be the case between his junior and senior year, as well."
The future Atlantic Coast Conference performer averaged 32.1 points as a junior with a season-high of 44 points in a loss to South Charleston.
