It's been almost two full years since a team other than Papillion LaVista-South (Papillion, Neb.) was ranked atop the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
But the Hornets of Bishop Moore (Orlando, Fla.) moved into the No. 1 spot after a three-way split among the previous top three teams at the
historic Battle on the Plains last Wednesday.
LaVista-South saw its 97-match winning streak end at the hands of No. 4 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.). Assumption then lost to Torrey Pines (San Diego), which then lost to LaVista-South.
In the meantime, Bishop Moore was throttling opponents in winning its 15th-straight match.
As a result of last week's top three teams all going 1-1, they each dropped a notch.
Two other Top 10 teams also suffered losses as Punahou (Honolulu) saw its two-year winning streak end and Carmel (Ind.) lost a 3-2 thriller to Bishop Chatard (Indianapolis). Carmel dropped one spot to No. 9, while Punahou dropped out of the top 10.
Moving into the top 10 were two unbeatens: No. 7 Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati) and No. 8 Doherty (Colorado Springs, Colo).
Joining the Top 25 this week were No. 19 Redondo Union (Redondo Beach, Calif.), No. 20 West Albany (Albany, Ore.), No. 22 Mt. Carmel (New Orleans), No. 23 New Trier (Winnetka, Ill.) and No. 25 West Aurora (Aurora, Ill.). West Albany, Mt. Carmel and New Trier are undefeated.
