One night after an embarrassing 16-point effort, Ryan Boatright exploded for a school-record 63 points Saturday as
East (Aurora, Ill.) outlasted previously unbeaten
Proviso West (Hillside, Ill.) in a 113-104 shootout.
The 5-foot-11 senior guard, who had only 16 points during Friday's 78-71 victory over Metea Valley (Aurora, Ill.), drilled 20 of 26 shots from the field (including seven three-pointers) and all 16 free throw attempts. He also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The University of Connecticut signee held the previous school record of 55 points, which he set earlier this year.
Boatright, who generally faces stacked defenses, told the Chicago Tribune, "I knew they were going to face-guard me, so I had to take advantage of every opportunity, which I was able to do. I was surprised they didn't double-team or play a box-and-one. That's their bad, I guess."
* Boatright's effort slightly overshadowed an outstanding 56-point effort on the same night by Morgan Park (Chicago, Ill.) star Wayne Blackshear. The 6-5, 215-pound University of Louisville signee also had 21 rebounds, eight blocks and seven steals in a 103-57 triumph over Chicago International Ellison.
