Ivan Galicia, a 5-foot-7 senior guard from Hot Springs, leads all New Mexico boys basketball players in two major categories during the early part of the season, according to the MaxPreps Computer Rankings. Galicia is the pacesetter in assists with a 6.8 average and in steals with an identical 6.8 per outing.
The top 10 leaders in steals are divided fairly evenly between veterans and underclassmen with six seniors and four juniors making up the list. In assists, however, just four seniors are among the top 10, which includes five juniors and one sophomore - No. 5 Dakota Powell, who averages 5.5 for Manzano.
Carlos Cordova, a 6-0 junior from Pecos, also is a prominent player in the state. The Panthers' star leads the state with 29.5 points per game and ranks No. 2 with 5.5 steals per outing. He exploded for 41 points in a 95-75 victory over Mora and drilled 16 of his 19 shots. He currently is shooting an impressive 77 percent from the field.
New Mexico's No. 1 rebounder with 12.9 per game is Dalin Stanford, a 6-5 junior from Goddard. Stanford also is averaging 13 points, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks.
