Video: Recap — Byrnes vs. Dorman 2016
See two of South Carolina's most dominant teams in the MaxPreps era do battle.
** Editor's note: This story's totals were updated on July 31, adding points for missing state titles. The only team to move in the standings was Dorman. Other changes were in total points **In the battle for Palmetto State dominance, the margin isn't massive. But Byrnes is the most dominant South Carolina football program — edging out South Pointe — since MaxPreps became America's source for high school sports in 2006.
How did the Rebels get there? In our formula, state titles are important and Byrnes has three to South Pointe's five. Advantage, South Pointe, you say. Maybe, but we also take into account state ranking, and Byrnes dominates. In fact, 2016's No. 20 ranking was the Rebels' lowest ranking in the MaxPreps era. Byrnes had never been ranked lower than fifth before last season.
South Pointe's credentials are impressive, too. Five titles. One runner-up finish. Top 25 ranking in every year but 2006.
Here is how the points break down:
1. 20 for a state title
2. 10 for state championship game appearance
3. Other points are based on where a team finished in the final
MaxPreps South Carolina Football Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For example, if a team finished No. 1 overall, it would receive 25 points. If it finished 25th overall, the team would get one point. No points are awarded if the team did not finish in the Top 25.
