While
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) coaches and officials were in the midst of a State Bowl Championship media luncheon in Carson (Los Angeles County), the
Denver Post reported the Spartans will host Denver power
Mullen (Colo.) next season.
According to the report, Mullen will travel to Concord for a Week 2 game on Sept. 7, 2012.
Mullen won three straight Colorado Class 5A championships (2008-10) and 34 consecutive games during that time. Since coach Dave Logan took over the program in 2003, Mullen is 110-12. He has won six state titles in Colorado, with previous stints at Arvada West and Chatfield, and is 201-43 overall.
Mullen is expected to return more than a dozen starters from a 9-3 team that lost in the state quarterfinals.
Reached late Monday, De La Salle Athletic Director Leo Lopoz said, "No comment. We're trying to get ready for a state bowl game, and not worrying about next season's schedule."
The Spartans (12-1) seek their third straight State Bowl Open Division title at 8 p.m. Saturday when it takes on the nation's No. 7 team Westlake-Westlake Village (14-0) at the Home Depot Center. De La Salle won a national-record 151 straight games from 1992-2004.
According to MaxPreps senior writer Gerry Valerio, Mullen has been the top program in Colorado since Logan took over. Valerio was the prep editor at the Rocky Mountain News for nine years and has covered preps in Colorado since 1989.
"The Mustangs always seem to have a handful of the state's top prospects, and that has translated into a lot of wins," Valerio said. "
They graduate a lot of talent this year, but
with at least a dozen or so starters back, coach Logan will have them in
contention again next season."
