One of the most successful football coaches in Wyoming in the past 20 years has resigned after he handed out a document to his players that included several inappropriate references and derogatory language.
The resignation of Pat Lynch, who won two state titles at
Buffalo (Wyo.), was accepted by the Johnson County School District 1 board on Nov. 7. Lynch had been placed on administrative leave after handing out the document to the team, according to the
Casper Star-Tribune.
The survey-type document, which was titled "Hurt Feelings Report", was given to Bison players before their first-round playoff game against Star Valley. Buffalo won that game before losing in the semifinals against Douglas on Nov. 4
Lynch, who did not coach in either playoff game, posted a 96-40 record in his 13-plus seasons, which included state championships in 2004 and 2005 and 12 consecutive playoff appearances. The Bison finished 6-4 this season.
Lynch, who will remain as a guidance counselor at the high school, wrote a letter of apology for the incident. It was read at the school board meeting.
"I would like to apologize for my lapse in judgment and the poor choice that I made from my position as the Head Football Coach for Buffalo High School," school board member Mark Gordon recited from the letter. "I know that this situation has caused you pain and discomfort, and for that I am truly sorry. As a person and a professional, I believe I will learn and grow from this experience and use it to help others."
