Video: St. Edward highlights Watch the Eagles defeat Cleveland Central Catholic.
The St. Edward Eagles won three games last week to stretch their win streak to 10, propelling them to the top of the MaxPreps Ohio boys basketball rankings.
The Eagles became the third team in 14 days to start the week at No. 1 following St. Vincent-St. Mary's and Archbishop Moeller, which sit at No. 2 and 3 in the current rankings.
St. Edward, led by longtime coach Eric Flannery, is after its third state title after crowns in 2013-14 and 1997-98. The Eagles' only loss this season was 60-50 to No. 8 Hilliard Bradley (15-2) on Dec. 21, but they've been perfect since. They did get a good tussle last week from Lutheran East before pulling out a 57-52 victory.
Other victories came over Aspire Academy (71-57) and Cleveland Central Catholic (62-49).
Shawnee (17-0) moved into the Top 10 for the first time — previous No. 9 La Salle dropped to No. 15 after a 59-40 loss to Moeller — while the other nine teams from last week remained.
Seventh-ranked University (Morgantown, WV) is included in the Ohio
rankings by the MaxPreps computer because it is a member of the Ohio
Valley Athletic Conference.
