The high school football season came to an end in Maryland over the weekend with the completion of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, but the No. 1 team in the state earned its crown on Nov. 19. That's when freelance
St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) defeated IMG Academy (Brandenton, Fla.) 34-24 in a battle between two of the top 10 teams in the nation.
The Panthers finished the season with an 8-1 record, losing only to St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) in their season opener before beating teams from five other states and Canada. St. Frances Academy tops the Maryland MaxPreps Top 25 for the fifth year in a row.
The No. 2 team in Maryland plays in a league that features schools from the The Chesapeake Bay State, but it isn't exactly from Maryland.
St. John's (Washington, D.C.) plays in the Washington Catholic Capital League, which includes three teams from Maryland — DeMatha (Hyattsville), Bishop McNamara (Forestville) and Our Lady of Good Counsel (Olney). St. John's (11-0) defeated the latter team to win the league playoff.
Quince Orchard (Gaithersburg, Md.), the Class 4A champion, was the highest-rated team out of the MPSSAA, finishing No. 7.
