Video: Highlights of East running back Jaylen Warren versus Bountiful
Warren rushed for 248 yards and two touchdowns on Friday night.
Matt Barker drilled three field goals, the last one a 39-yard field goal with one second left, lifting
East (Salt Lake City) to a stunning 23-21 upset at No. 21
De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) on Friday night.
Down 21-20, East (5-0) took over at its own 5 with just 3:10 remaining and mixed up the pass and run beautifully, keyed by a third-down, 24-yard completion from quarterback
Ben Ford to
Tyler Eteuati. That set up Barker's third field goal that just went over the crossbar, sending the visitors' side wild.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Spartans lateraled the ball several times but eventually one backward pass went out of bounds to end it. De La Salle (3-1), which escaped with a 28-27 win last week over Servite (Anaheim, Calif.), has now dropped seven of its last 10 games against out-of-state teams.
It was its first loss at Owen Owens field for De La Salle since Sept. 27, 2008 when it went down by the identical 23-21 score on a last-second field goal by Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.).
East dominated the game statistically with 525 yards, 413 coming on the ground, including 248 on 25 carries by
Jaylen Warren. He came into the game with a Utah-leading 841 rushing yards.
Warren capped a 71-yard drive with a 2-yard scoring run to give East its first lead at 17-14 early in the third quarter.
Kairee Robinson, who rushed for 94 yards, caught a 44-yard pass on De La Salle's next possession, but fumbled back to East. Robinson rushed for first-half touchdowns of 25 and 55 yards.
Another Barker field goal increased the lead to 20-14, but De La Salle took back the lead with 1:15 left in the third quarter on a 2-yard run by quarterback
Abel Ordaz. It capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive.
Each team chewed up a lot of time and yards on their next possessions, but De La Salle, which managed just 253 yards, punted to East and seemed to have the visitors pinned back. But the Utah power converted three third-down plays to earn the victory.
