There was nothing superstitious about Archbishop Mitty's 13th state volleyball title. But there was something unique as it was the first California Interscholastic Federation's Open Division state title.
As a result, the Monarchs were named 2016 California Team of the Year and Archbishop Mitty's Bret Almazan-Cezar was named state Coach of the Year by MaxPreps.
The Monarchs won 39 of 43 matches, and in seven postseason matches Archbishop Mitty won 21 sets and lost one. In the title match against a strong Santa Margarita team, the Monarchs dominated 25-19, 25-22 and 25-18.
Almazan-Cezar said there were three turning points during the championship season.
The first was winning the prestigious Durango Invitational in Las Vegas. In the title match, junior setter
Makaela Tanaka dished 31 assists in a 2-0 win over Xavier College Prep of Phoenix.
"We found out how good we could be," he said as the Monarchs went 7-0 and lost just one set.
The second was at the Nike Invite in Phoenix (Ariz.). "We gained some humility," said Almazan-Cezar after Archbishop Mitty won five of seven matches and lost twice by 2-0 margins.
The third came in November when Almazan-Cezar said it was "time to clean, focus, and prioritize. Re-establish (that) it's a team thing."
And that they did, outscoring their opponents 546-391. There were no pushovers in November's playoff run as Mitty's opponents combined for 178 wins against just 44 losses.
Two of the Monarchs' four losses came against out-of-state powers, Mercy (Louisville, Ken.) and Corona del Sol (Tempe, Ariz.). The in-state defeats were to Mater Dei and Ventura. Those four teams were a combined 138-26.
The coach of the champion Monarchs said he expected his team to be good, but that he was surprised at how well Tanaka played.
"We knew she could put up hittable balls," he said. "We didn't realize what a great decision maker she would be."
Tanaka, an All-State selection, dished out 11.7 assists per set.
In addition to the Durango tournament win, the Monarchs also captured the Stockton Classic.

Julia Devine – Archbishop Mitty will be heavily favored to repeat in 2017.
However, Almazan-Cezar is quick to point out that losing MaxPreps All-Americans
Candice Denny (Arizona signee) and
Kate Formico (Stanford signee) on the court and
Alyssa Wright off the court will be difficult to replace. Wright is the first back-to-back sportsmanship award winner at state.
When asked to compare this state title to others he has coached, Almazan-Cezar said "None of them ever compares, but winning the first Open Division is something that will always be."
He has coached 10 state titles.
MaxPreps 2016 California All-State Volleyball Teams
California D1 Player of the Year – Lexi Sun, Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach), 6-3 Sr.Sun, who was named MaxPreps 2016 National Volleyball Player of the Year, averaged 5.9 kills per set with a 55.5 percent kill average for her 630 kills to lead Santa Fe Christian to 32-8 season that included the San Diego Section title and a berth in the state's Open Division final four. She added 60 blocks and 45 aces, 288 digs (2.7), chipped in 40 assists and returned 447 serves for a set average of 4.2. She finished her three-year prep career with 1,360 kills and 687 digs.
Sun has been a member of the 2016 U.S. Women's Junior National Team, the 2014 U16 Team USA and a member of the USA Beach U17 National Team that won gold at FIVB World Championships in Acapulco, Mexico. She signed with Texas.
"Lexi is one of a kind," said Amanda Miles, Santa Fe Christian coach. "I have only known Lexi for one year I can promise she will be one of the most memorable athletes from my career. She will leave an impression on me that far exceeds the physical accomplishments on the court. Lexi is as good as it gets."
An outside hitter, Sun played her best in playoff matches – 31 kills in 3-0 sweep over Mater Dei, 28 in 3-0 sweep over Cathedral Catholic and 28 in 3-0 season-ending loss to Santa Margarita. She averaged better than 8.2 kills per set in the postseason. There were at least a half-dozen lopsided wins during the season that limited Sun's playing time and when she took no more than a dozen kill shots in a match. Her season's average was 28.
Sun, who signed with Texas, is ranked by most recruiting or volleyball organizations as the No. 1 high school volleyball player in the country. She was a MaxPreps Freshman All-American in 2013 and a member of the MaxPreps 2014 Sophomore All-American team.
"To say Lexi is special would be an understatement," Miles said. "The way that she commands the court, walks through the halls and lights up a room is truly unique. She has a way of connecting with each member of the team and prides herself on all her relationships she has on and off the court at Santa Fe Christian. Lexi has attended SFC since kindergarten and I would challenge anyone to find an individual with more pride for her school. She embodies what it means to be a Christian athlete."
Santa Fe Christian High School Athletic director Chad Bickley said Sun is the best volleyball player he has seen.
"From the Nike Tournament in Phoenix, where the top teams and talent in country played, to the San Diego CIF to State CIF, I have not seen a better player than Lexi," Bickley said.

MB - Candice Denny, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 6-2 Sr.Denny, who signed with Arizona, was the best player on the court as the Monarchs won California's first Open Division championship and the school's 13th state title. She was Player of the Year in the West Catholic Athletic League, arguably one of the toughest conferences in the country. Denny had a kill percentage of 52.5, averaged better than a blocked shot per set and served 90.3 percent.
MB - Alexis Light, Pleasant Grove (Elk Grove), 6-5 Sr.Headed to UCLA, Light was named the Elk Grove Citizen's Player of the Year. She had 510 kills (5.2 average) this season with a kill percentage of 44.9 as the Eagles won 29 matches.
OH - Mima Mirkovic, Woodbridge (Irvine), 5-10 Sr.Mirkovic, who has signed with California, averaged 6.7 kills in 57 sets as Woodbridge went 26-5. She was named Orange County Register All-Second team.
OH - Meghan McClure, Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), 6-1, Sr.McClure, who will attend Stanford, guided the Eagles to a 38-5 season and into the finals of the Open Division championship game. She averaged 4.4 kills, 4.0 served receptions and 2.2 digs per set. She also served for a 96.6 percent ratio and blocked 75 shots. McClure was named the All-County Register's Player of the Year.
OH - Sammy Slater, Ventura, 6-2 Sr.In leading Ventura to a 36-3 record and a deep-playoff run, Slater averaged better than five kills per set and added better than three digs each time on the court. She will play in the sand for USC. She is the Most Valuable Player for the Channel League and the Player of the Year in CIF-SS D2. She is a Ventura Star's two-time Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.
OH - Kayla Lund, Flintridge Sacred Heart (La Canada-Flintridge), 5-11 Sr.A four-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American, Lund averaged 5.5 kills (51.9 kill percent) in leading the Tologs to 24 wins. She also had 348 digs and 81 aces. Lund, who has signed with Pittsburgh, had 251 assists as a senior. Lund was named the Pasadena Star-News Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
OH - Shannon Scully, Mater Dei (Santa Ana), 6-2 Sr.The Utah-bound Scully was the key to the youthful Monarchs 35-7 season as she averaged over four kills, four serve receptions and three digs per set. Add to that, 37 aces and a 91.6 serve percentage and 210 points. She was named first team All-CIF Southern Section.
OH - Taylen Ballard, Clovis, 6-3 Sr.In leading Clovis to a 34-11 record (including 28 wins in a row to open the season), Ballard averaged six kills and three digs per set. She has signed with BYU.
OH - Hannah Phair, Edison (Huntington Beach), 5-10 Sr.Named the Daily Pilot Girls Player of the Year, Phair helped the Chargers to 36-8 record and the state D1 title. She finished with 376 kills, 286 digs and 47 service aces, earning All-CIF Southern Section D1, first team All-Orange County and first team All-Sunset League accolades. She will play sand volleyball at UCLA.
S - Devon Chang, Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), 5-11 Jr.Chang not only averaged 11.2 assists (1,207), but served at a 96.7 percent rate and blocked better than one shot per set. She led the Eagles to a 38-5 record and an Open Division state finals berth. In 15 matches this season, she averaged better than a dozen assists per set. She has committed to California. She was a finalist for MaxPreps National Junior Player of the Year.
S - Makaela Tanaka, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 5-10 Jr.Someone had to get the ball to the Monarchs' outstanding hitters and Tanaka responded by averaging 11.7 assists per set. She also averaged two digs and blocked 49 shots. She served 94.7 percent.
S - Britt Bommer, Mira Costa (Manhattan Beach), 6-0 Sr.
The Santa Monica Daily Breeze co-Player of the Year, Bommer was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Ann Kang Tournament in Hawaii in August. Signed with Northwestern, Bommer was first team All-CIF Southern Section.
L - Dani Dennison, Edison (Huntington Beach), 5-8 Sr.
Dennison played a key role in the Chargers 36-8 season and state D1 title, earning her a share of the Sunset League MVP award. She recorded a school record 612 digs and finished her career with a school best 1,380 digs. Dennison also had 42 aces and 100 assists. Dennison has signed with Texas Christian University.
L - Kate Formico, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 5-9 Sr.
Formico served for 313 points (59 aces and a 93 percent serving average) for the state Open Division champs. Signed by Stanford, she also averaged 4.2 digs and 3.3 serve receptions per set.
AA - Jacqueline DiSanto, Menlo-Atherton (Atherton), 5-6 Sr.
DiSanto was named the Peninsula Bay League's co-MVP after leading the Bears (30-6) to a 14-0 league title and a state final D1 berth. She led the Bears in kills (3.7 per set average) and served 70 aces (96.6 percent) for 314 points. She also totaled more than 400 serve receptions and 400 digs.
Division 2

Committed to Long Beach State, Martinez created one third of all of Westridge's points. She averaged more than 7.0 kills per set eight times this season and finished with 520 (5.8 per set average). She had 37 kills against Los Altos, 32 against Monrovia, 34 against Ramona and 21 in the CIF State Southern California semifinals against Claremont. A three-time MaxPreps All-American, she also served 35 aces, had 38 blocks and 173 digs.
MB - Katherine Lynch, Palos Verdes (Palos Verdes Estates), 6-2 Sr.
Lynch was tough in the middle in leading Palos Verdes to 23 victories (a school-record). She had 151 kills (hitting at a .479 clip), and helped the Sea Kings reach the second round of the CIF-SS D2 playoffs. Lynch was a first team All-Bay League selection.
MH - Sophia Howling, Venice (Los Angeles), 6-2 Sr.
Signed with Hawaii, Howling was named one of the Los Angeles Section's top players after leading Venice to 24 victories.
OH - Brooke Gilcrest, Redwood (Visalia), 6-2 Sr.
Gilchrist powered the Rangers to the West Yosemite League title and three postseason matches by averaging 4.5 kills per set.
OH - Simone Bliss, Claremont, 5-9 Sr.
The 5-9 outside hitter was a first team All CIF selection and earned Most Valuable Player honors in the Palomares League for helping the Wolfpack to their first league title in 18 years. Managed a team-high 268 kills in 69 sets with a high of 29 against Flintridge Sacred Heart in non-league match. She also had 241 digs, 31 blocks and 19 aces. She has signed with Johns Hopkins.
OH - Marissa Montoya, Glendora, 5-10 Sr.
Montoya, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune's Player of the Year, had 381 kills, 449 digs and served 52 aces. She helped Glendora High School to a share of the Palomares League title and helped lead the Tartans to the CIF Southern Section D3 championship match and the state D2 regionals. Montoya was named to the CIF-SS D3 team.
OH - Olivia Harden, Exeter, 5-11 Sr.
Harden averaged 3.7 kills, 2.9 digs per set and served 58 aces as the Monarchs won 32 matches. She is a two-time member of the Tulare All-County team.
S - Audrey Lamoureux, Elk Grove, 5-10 Sr.
Lamoureux dished out 1,245 assists for a 9.0 per set average in leading the Herd to a 38-9 season. She also had 113 kills (62.4 percent kill average) and served 68 aces and had a 96.8 serving percentage totaling 373 points. She has signed with Cal State University East Bay.
S - Tori Dilfer, Valley Christian (San Jose), 5-10 Sr.
Dilfer quarterbacked the Warriors to the state D2 title match when she dished out 8.8 assists and 3.9 digs per set. She also had 31 aces and 61 kills in 64 sets. The daughter of former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer, she has signed with TCU.
S - Alexa Gallegos, Saint Joseph (Lakewood), 5-10 Sr.
Named the CIF-Southern Sections D3 Player of the Year, Gallegos averaged 10.1 assists and served 93.4 percent as the Jesters won 28 matches and reached the state D2 semifinals.
AA - Hannah Presley, Tracy, 5-10 Sr.
Presley's high school finale was dominant in many ways, as the 5-foot-10 force compiled 338 kills (3.2 per set), 63 blocks and 485 assists (4.6 per set). She was named The Stockton Record's Player of the Year. Presley was voted co-Tri-City Athletic League MVP. She will attend Army.
AA - Megan Faraimo, Cathedral Catholic (San Diego), 6-1 Jr.
Named San Diego Section first team All-Star, Faraimo led the Dons to the state D2 title. She averaged 2.7 kills per set and better than five per set in her final four playoff games. Faraimo, who verbally committed to UCLA as a softball pitcher, led the Dons with 13 kills in the state title-winning match.
A-A - Kayla Joyce, Pleasant Valley (Chico), 5-6 Sr.
Joyce was a MaxPreps All-American setter as a junior, but moved up front and responded with 2.6 kills, 5.3 digs and 8.7 serve receptions. She also served for 89 aces as the Vikings reached the second round of the state playoffs.
Division 3
Sabrina Smith, Campolindo

Jones, who will play collegiately at Penn, led Acalanes to the D3 state title and a 31-win season. She led the Dons in most categories (kills, blocks, aces) and was second in digs. She had 18 kills in the state title-winning match. She was a MaxPreps Medium Schools All-American.
MB - Sabrina Smith, Campolindo (Moraga), 6-4 Sr.
Signed with UCLA, Smith led Campolindo to a 30-win season and the North Coast Section title. In 82 sets, she averaged 2.8 kills (54.7 kill percentage) and blocked 1.6 shots per set.
MH - Bella Bouma, Bakersfield Christian (Bakersfield), 6-0 Sr.
A two-time first-team Bakersfield California honoree, Bouma the Eagles to a fourth consecutive Central Section title and a 35-2 season. In 109 sets, she led BCHS with 336 kills (61.7 kill percentage), 113 blocks and 44 aces.
OH - Macey Hayden, Whitney (Rocklin), 6-0 Sr.
Outstanding
all over the court, Hayden had 38 service errors in 625 receptions,
blocked 87 shots, served 59 aces and averaged 3.7 digs and 4.9 kills per
set. She was one of six state players to record more than 600 kills
this season. As a result of her play, Whitney won 30 matches. She has
signed with California State University Sacramento.
OH - May Pertofsky, Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), 6-2 So.
Named the CIF-Southern Section D4 Player of the Year, Pertofsky led the Trailblazers to a 32-4 season. She averaged 4.4 kills per set with a kill percentage of 51.1. She was named a MaxPreps second team Medium Schools All-American.
OH - Tesa Oaks, Woodcrest Christian (Riverside), 6-1 Sr.
Oaks closed out her career with another impressive season – 6.1 kills and 3.3 digs per set – as the Royals played deep into the playoffs. Oaks, who will attend California Baptist, averaged over seven kills per set in eight playoff games. She was chosen the Ambassador League's MVP and first team in CIF-Southern Section D6.
OH - Jolie Samuelson, La Quinta, 5-9 Sr.
Named the Desert Sun's Player of the Year, Samuelson led the Desert Valley League with 332 kills in just 77 sets (4.3 kills per set).
OH - Claire Kovensky, Citrus Valley (Redlands), 6-0 Sr.
A future Air Force cadet, Kovensky lead Citrus Valley to a 23-7 season when she averaged 5.3 kills, 4.1 serve receptions and 3.8 digs per set. She also served for 209 points and had 61 aces. She was a MaxPreps Medium School All-American.
OH - Chloe Fields Owens, Carson, 5-8 Sr.
Fields Owens was an All-CIF L.A. City Section first team selection for Marine League champion Carson. She had 313 kills for Carson and led the Colts to the section's Open Division consolation championship and to a CIF State D3 first-round match.
OH - Jessica Pinasco, Buhach Colony (Atwater), 5-8 Sr.
The Merced Sun-Star Player of the Year, Pinasco lead the team with 318 kills (3.9 per set average), 400 serve receptions (4.9 per set average) and 302 digs during the regular season. As a result, the Thunder (who did not win a game in 2014) won 22 matches.
OH - Julia Sangiacomo, Justin-Siena (Napa), 6-3 So
Sangiacomo led the Braves with 323 kills, fifth-most in both the North Coast Section's Division III and the MCAL. She also recorded 60 kills, 55 blocks and 164 digs. She was named the Napa Register's All-Napa County Volleyball Player of the Year.
S - Grace Rose, Crossroads (Santa Monica), 5-9 Sr.
Rose dished an average of eight assists per set as Crossroads won 27 of 32 matches and reached the state D3 championship game. She was named the Southern Section's D6 CIF Player of the Year.
S - Bailey Wilson, Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth), 5-10 Sr.
Wilson recorded 1,009 assists in 103 sets and served 57 aces in a 32-4 season that resulted in eight playoff games.
Division 4
Katie Smoot, Notre Dame

Signed with Arizona, Smoot closed her prep career with 630 kills (5.5 per set average), 52 blocks, 61 aces and 2.1 digs and 3.7 per set averages. She was named the San Mateo Times Player of the Year after leading the Tigers to 32 wins. During her four-year varsity career, the Tigers posted an overall record of 119-43, including back-to-back CCS D4 championships. Smoot is a two-time MaxPreps All-American.
MB - Jennifer Laird, Mission Prep (San Luis Obispo), 5-11 Sr.
Heading to St. Mary's, Laird was The Tribune's 2016 County Girls Volleyball Player of the Year and led the PAC 8 in total kills (397, 4.5 per set average) and ranked third overall in the CIF-Southern Section in hitting percentage (.416) and kill percentage (56.3).
OH - Sjea Anderson, Monte Vista Christian (Watsonville), 5-10 Sr.
Anderson led the Mustangs to the state D5 semifinals by averaging 5.2 kills and 3.2 digs per set. She averaged better than seven kills per set in six state playoff matches. She was named the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division's Most Valuable Player.
OH - Charlie Ekstrom, Point Loma (San Diego), 6-0 Jr.
Ekstrom led Point Loma to the state D4 finals. She averaged 4.1 kills, 2.1 digs and 4.5 serve receptions for the Pointers. She also blocked 39 shots and served 51 aces. She has committed Loyola Marymount.
OH - Demari Webb, Loma Linda Academy (Loma Linda), 5-10 Jr.
Webb put up big numbers in leading Loma Linda to a 26-5 season. She notched 443 serve receptions (4.3 per set average) and 491 kills (4.8 per set average) and served for 207 points (93 percent with 42 aces).
OH - Annaka Jorgenson, Ontario Christian (Ontario), 6-0 So.
Jorgensen, a first-team Ambassador League and All-CIF selection totaled 520 kills (in 101 sets). She tallied 20 or more kills 10 times with a high of 31. Jorgensen also chalked up 74 aces, 39 blocks and 264 digs.
OH - Samantha McCreath, Ripon, 5-10 Sr.
Named first team All-Area by the Stockton Record, McCreath averaged 5.2 kills, served 96 percent, blocked 69 shots in 62 sets and averaged 3.9 digs per set as Ripon was 24-5.
OH - Asia Clarke, Elsinore (Wildomar), 6-0 Jr.
Clarke finished the season with 427 kills (4.1 per set) and 321 digs (3.1 per set) in helping the Tigers (31-8) reach the D4 championship. She was selected the Sunbelt League's MVP and first team in CIF-SS D4.
S - Selina Xu, Menlo School (Atherton), 5-11 So.
Xu led Menlo to the state D4 championship where she averaged two kills, two digs and 5.5 assists per set. She also served for 188 points. In the state-title match, she had 12 kills, 12 digs and 19 assists. She was named a MaxPreps All-American in 2016.
S - Haylee Templeton, Elsinore (Wildomar), 5-8 Sr.
In leading the Tigers to an unbeaten Sunbelt League title and a 31-8 season, Templeton served for 327 points (94.3 percent) and 96 aces in 95 sets. She also handed out 1,002 assists (10.2 per set average).
S - Riley Goff, Kelseyville, 5-6 Sr.
Goff led the Knights to a second straight undefeated league championship, a berth in the North Coast Section D4 playoffs, a trip to the NorCal D4 playoffs and a 25-7 overall record. She will play at Sonoma State.
S - Sahara Martinez, Bonita (La Verne), 5-10 Sr.
Martinez totaled more than 2,000 assists in her career at Bonita and 748 (a 10.4 per set average) as a senior. She was named All-CIF and to the San Gabriel and Daily Bulletin all-area teams. She has signed with the University of Texas at El Paso.
S - Kristine Gese, Notre Dame (Belmont), 5-9, Sr.
In 104 sets, Gese dished 1,141 assists (11.2 per set average) as Notre Dame won 32 matches. In three varsity seasons, Gese compiled 3,106 assists for an 11.4 average. She was a second team MaxPreps Small Schools All-American in 2015 and first team this year.
L - Jessica Houghton, Menlo School (Atherton), 5-8 Sr.
Houghton was a defensive standout for the Knights as they won the California D4 title. She averaged 4.4 digs and 6.1 serve receptions in a 25-8 season. She also served for 238 points, 42 aces and a 90 percent average. A MaxPreps Small Schools All-American, she has signed with Michigan.
Division 5
Grace Lommen, Fall River

A first-team MaxPreps All-American, Almgren-Bell quarterbacked a 34-1 season that ended with a state D5 title and 26-straight wins. Almgren-Bell dished out 34 assists in the state-title match. She will attend Washington University in St. Louis with her All-American twin sister, Allison. Almgren-Bell was the Bay Counties League Most Valuable Player.
MB - Hannah Tostado, St. Paul (Santa Fe Springs), 6-1 Jr.
The Whittier Daily News Player of the Year had another big season. She had 316 kills, 110 blocks and 32 aces. Her .417 hitting percentage was second-best in the CIF-SS and her blocks were 12th-best in the section. She had double-digit kills in 16 matches, including a season-high 15 in the regular-season finale against La Salle.
MH - Lisette Ramos, Gladstone (Covina), 5-9 Jr.
With Ramos leading the way, Gladstone won its second consecutive Montview League title and was the top seed entering the CIF-SS D8 tournament. She led the Gladiators with 287 kills and 32 blocks. She also served 57 aces.
OH - Alison Almgren-Bell, Head Royce (Oakland), 5-9 Sr.
Almgren-Bell teamed with her All-American sister, Jessica, to lead Head Royce to a 34-1 season and a state 5A title. She had 15 kills in the title match. A second team MaxPreps All-American, she will attend Washington University in St. Louis with her sister.
OH - Sarah Calabrese, St. Vincent de Paul (Petaluma), 5-10 Sr.
Led St. Vincent to a 19-1 season averaging four kills and a serving ace per serve. The only Mustang loss was in the state D5 playoffs. She was the North Central League's co-MVP.
OH - Keara Rutz, Capistrano Valley Christian (San Juan Capistrano), 5-10 So.
Rutz led the Eagles to the Express Gold Valley league title, a 30-4 season and nine playoff matches ending in the D5 state semifinals. She averaged 4.9 kills per set with a 48.6 kill percentage, served for 271 points and 135 aces.
OH - Lindsey Bryant, Durham, 5-10 Jr.
Bryant led Durham to the North Section D5 title, an unbeaten Mid-Valley League title and a postseason loss to state champion Head-Royce. She averaged 4.5 kills per set with a 52.2 kill percentage, served 57 aces and blocked 58 shots.
OH - Liset Castillo, Los Molinos, 5-8 Sr.
Co-MVP of the Five Star Conference, Castillo led the Bulldogs to 28 wins by averaging 3.7 kills and 4.1 digs per set. She also served 116 aces in 101 sets.
OH - Kirsten Mueller, Hillcrest Christian (Thousand Oaks), 5-9 Sr.
Mueller had 32 kills and 12 digs as Hillcrest Christian beat Lake Arrowhead Christian in four sets in the CIF-Southern Section D10 final. She was named the Southern Section's D10 Player of the Year.
S - McKinley Fox, Santa Catalina (Monterey), 6-1 Jr.
A starter since her freshman year, Fox compiled 841 assists this year and helped take Santa Catalina on a record-breaking season that included a 27-0 start and the Cougars' first Central Coast Section D5 title. She was named the Monterey Herald's Volleyball Player of the Year.
S - Tiana Whittington, San Gabriel Academy (San Gabriel), 5-2 Sr.
Named the CIF-Southern Section D9 Player of the Year, Whittington was also named to the Pasadena Star News' All-Area Team and guided San Gabriel to a 28-5 season.
S - Grace Lommen, Fall River (McArthur), 5-6 Sr.
Lommen served 99 aces 302 points and dished out 838 assists as the Bulldogs won the Shasta Cascade League and 34 matches. They also reached the NorCal D6 semifinals as Lommen won first-team All-League honors
L - Carissa Rivette, Frazier Mountain (Lebec), 5-6 Sr.
The four-sport athlete Rivette averaged 7.3 digs per set and served for 244 points as the Falcons had a deep playoff run and won 32 of 37 matches. A repeat All-State performer, she also received 551 serve receptions.
