There have been schools with more championships and more wins, but we have not been to a place that has had so many significant figures go to their school. I am talking about John Belushi from the Blues Brothers, Bob Woodward from the Nixon scandal, Edwin P. Hubble who invented the Hubble telescope, and the man that made football what it is today named Red Grange. On top of all these important people, Wheaton-Warrenville South has also put together quite a nice history of championship football teams. Four teams in the 90's were state champions of Illinois, while this year is the third straight year to the semi-finals.
Mike and I got to talk to the 12-0 Tigers today, and they were all quick to give credit to their teammates. RB Danny Dierking, Purdue commitment, has broken all of Red Grange's records but was quick to say, "I have had great offensive lines over the past three years, and all the credit goes to those guys." The leader in interceptions for this talented team, DB & K Patrick Rooney, gave all the credit to his defensive line for his accomplishments this year on the field.
The team is hoping that this year will be the charm, and that next week they will have the opportunity, depending on the outcome of this week's other semifinal game, to either avenge last years loss in the semifinals to the eventual state champions Lincoln-Way East or beat the most storied program in Illinois, Mount Carmel. The game is at 1:00pm this Saturday at Wheaton-Warrenville South on the field that is named after Red Grange, so until then we will take a visit to York High tomorrow and we will finish getting our RV worked on in between time.
